“Win or lose, God is there.” That’s the phrase you could use to define the College Football National Championship game on Monday Night. Both teams showed their faith on the field, with Ohio State taking home the championship and Notre Dame kicking things off with the first touchdown but never quite catching up. And the religious gesture by both clubs, led by their respective QBs Will Howard and Riley Leonard, impressed former NFL star Brett Favre, a figure both celebrated and scrutinized in the sports world.
Favre, who had a two-decade-long NFL career, was pretty outspoken about his religious beliefs. He had once talked about how he used to pray before hopping on the gridiron, “We prayed so much, right up until we went out for pregame. We had a prayer right at my locker.” So, Favre, who never forgot to say his prayers before throwing those TDs on the gridiron, was moved after witnessing Leonard’s and Howard’s gestures to God. “Great to see the two QBs Ohio State Howard & Notre Dame Leonard gave praise to Jesus in victory and defeat.🙌” Favre wrote on X.

See, Leonard was the first one to show off his religious side on Monday Night. After he had just given Notre Dame a lead with his rushing TD, the 22-year-old showed off his armband on camera. And it wasn’t any regular armband that players occasionally wear. It had a Matthew 23:12 bible verse displayed on it that read, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself with be exalted.” But that wasn’t the only time Leonard swaggered his faith. Even before the game, he told the reporters, “We’re the two main teams to just publicly display our faith the most. I truly believe that Jesus was looking over both our shoulders throughout the season. And put these two teams on a pedestal for a reason.”

But not to break Leonard’s heart, his rival Will Howard had the last laugh. Being a fifth-year senior, Howard completed 17 of his 21 passes for 231 yards. And to add to those numbers, he also threw two massive TDs, both in the first half. Without a doubt, the committee named Howard the National Championship Offensive Player of the Game. And when it was time for him to express his feelings after the game.
Howard immediately, like Leonard, displayed a Bible verse on his wristband. Then, he proceeded to thank the Almighty above through ESPN’s Molly McGrath: “First and foremost. I’ve got to give the glory and the praise to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t be here without him.” This shows the strong religious beliefs the two QBs share. But here’s the thing: They aren’t the only ones who proudly flexed their faith on camera.

Ohio State’s head coach, Ryan Day, in his pregame pressers, had already teased his players’ connection with Jesus Christ, “We have Bible studies and reflections that we have that we’ll have folks come in and speak at.” Well, after the game, Ohio State players’ love for God was there for everyone to witness. The moment that CFB title went to the Buckeyes. One of the teams’ captains, defensive end Jack Sawyer, just wanted to thank God for what he had achieved, “I can’t even put it into words. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever felt in my life. We just thank God for giving us the ability to go out there and do it.”
Then, it was time for Defensive Player of the Game Cody Simon to express his religious feelings: “The Lord did something special on this team. We’re just so thankful.” He even pointed out the spirituality of his team, which apparently made this possible. Seeing how both reacted to their faith does send a strong message to other Christ believers out there. Like whatever the outcome, never feel shy to express your love for God. Because today could be a failure, but you never know what will happen tomorrow. And keeping that fate that good things are around the corner is what truly pushes you forward.
