Had some good years in the NFL, so that was OK, but this is a dream come true.” No doubt Bill Belichick has given some wonderful and historic years to the league in his 24-season tenure. But this time, the former NFL head coach’s dream came true after he earned the HC role for college football at UNC. However, he still had two wishes this Christmas, which were unfulfilled.

This Monday, Bill Belichick shared a post on his official Instagram account. In this post, fans could see a Christmas card where the 72-year-old wrote his two wishes for Santa this December 25. So what was it? Well, the card details started off with “Dear Santa,” and continued with Belichick’s name and address.

The legendary coach, however, stroked off the ‘age’ section and selected the option of being “nice,” instead of “naughty” this year. Then finally in the next line, Bill Belichick wrote his two wishes: “For Christmas this year I would like to have: 1. Great Players Who Want To Help Me Build A Winning Football Program At UNC. Bill Belichick’s two Christmas wishes reflect his focus on building a successful football program at UNC. He would certainly need talented players who are passionate about contributing to a winning team. He’s keen on connecting, even saying his direct messages are open. As per his second wish, he would also require the support of UNC alumni, fans, and supporters to step up and play their part in supporting the program.

Well, with this, his message is clear to Santa Claus that he wants a successful team under him. According to him, success comes from both strong players and a united, supportive community. So, now, it remains to be seen whether Santa will fulfill his wish or not. Until then, he has another wish. But this time, it’s for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

That’s the reason why Bill Belichick thinks the current system, which rewards the worst record with the top pick, could push teams to lose on purpose. So, now the question is: What’s his solution? Well, he would say a lottery system like the NBA’s. Yes! The NBA’s draft lottery system fascinates Bill Belichick. Hence, he wants a similar lottery system for the NFL, instead of determining the order by record and the strength of schedule for the tiebreakers in the NFL draft year.

Belichick said, “I was never involved in [tanking] but I don’t know what happens somewhere else. It’s different than the NBA. The NBA kind of rectified that by having a lottery. So even if you’re the worst team, you’re not guaranteed the first pick. In the NFL, that’s not quite the case. If you are the worst team, you do get the first pick.” Along with this, he even added that it’s not “a bad idea for the competitiveness of the sport,” suggesting that adding an element of chance would make things fairer and more exciting.

Anyway, after the Giants’ 45-33 victory over the Colts, the Patriots now hold the top pick in the NFL Draft order 2025. What’s your take on Belichick’s suggestion?
