The way rumors were swirling around Bill Belichick’s move to Chapel Hill, it was only a matter of time before it became official. North Carolina has managed to bring someone who has already wreaked havoc in the NFL. Winning six Super Bowl titles as the coach of the New England Patriots, Belichick will now try his hands at college football.

He has taken over a program that hasn’t won an ACC title since 1980. Even this season, the Tar Heels were nowhere near fighting for a title. Choosing to let go of Mack Brown after a disastrous 6-6 campaign, the Tar Heels have thrown the bag towards Bill Belichick. As per The Athletic, Belichick has agreed to a $50M five-year deal in Chapel Hill after the UNC Board of Trustees approved his contract.

And Belichick is seemingly over the moon after he was announced as their head coach, “I am excited for the opportunity. “I’ve always wanted to coach in college football. It just never really worked out. Had some good years in the NFL… so that was OK. It’s great to come back home to Carolina and come back home to an environment I grew up in.” Well, Belichick could be referring to his dad Steven’s reign as an assistant coach from 1953 to 1955 at UNC.

He even brought his dad’s old UNC sweatshirt, which had No.38 on the back of it. As for Belichick, he isn’t the only one happy with his new gig in college football. His son, Brian Belichick, also expressed his excitement about the former Patriots coach taking over UNC’s coaching job, “I’m really happy for my dad. I think a lot of people were excited, including him, and it’s going to be fun to watch. He loves coaching football. That’s what he should be doing.” Well, Belichick has already announced some major decisions at his first press conference after landing the UNC job.

Bill Belichick announces the first member of his coaching staff

This name wouldn’t really surprise you, as he was already part of North Carolina after Mack Brown’s departure. Yes, we are talking about Tar Heels interim head coach Freddie Kitchens. Announcing his decision, Belichick expressed, “I also met with Coach Kitchens who will be the first member of the staff that we hire. I have a ton of respect for him.” Well, Kitchens has a ton of experience himself in the NFL. He was the head coach of the Browns in 2019 when they finished 6-10 under him. Before that, Kitchens was an assistant for 13 years, which shows the experience he has on his side.

As for the Tar Heels, they also have a new GM, Michael Lombardi. After serving as a long-time NFL scout, Lombardi would be helping Belichick identify upcoming talents. Dropping an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Lombardi gave a sneak peek behind the pitch that would be used to bring prospective footballers, “If you want to play for the greatest coach of all time and you want to be around a winning program, please, enter the portal. We’ll take you. We’re going to go through it deeply. This is an advertisement for it.”
