Awards are a great testimony to the sheer result of hard work, talent, and the matches that a player wins for his NFL sides. While nearly all players hold the awards close to them, one of the Lions legends did not want any accolades given to him. In a hilarious backstory surrounding Barry Sanders, Kevin Glover, the Lions‘ former safety narrated an incident in which the former running back player would leave his trophies.

Barry Sanders was an extraordinary player who focused on winning matches rather than individual performances. In an anecdote shared by Sanders’s team-mate and friend Kevin Glover, the Lions legend only prioritized winning as a unit and would be nonchalant about the awards.

The 1980s Lions team was surrounded by legends and exemplary players. The side had the likes of Barry Sanders and Kevin Glover in the ranks. As Glover went down memory lane in the recent documentary Bye Bye Barry”, he revealed a jaw-dropping insight about his friend. “He said, oh take it home (MVP award). I take it home and Barry, William White, and Bennie Blades would come over to my house and my wife would cook for them. Lomas Brown’s wife would cook on different days for em’. And he left his MVP trophy in my apartment the entire year.”

The narration just goes to show that for Barry what mattered most was the team bonding and the memories created while eating food together. Rather than caring about an individual award that as Kevin mentioned would be won each time by the former running back player. It just goes to show the extent of humility extended by Barry Sanders. Maybe perhaps that was the reason for his sudden retirement.
