“If it is to be, it is up to me!” Those were ex-Falcon Sean Weatherspoon’s words on X after he had just bagged a new job in high school. See, there’s probably no relation between Weatherspoon’s latest post on X and him taking his talents to the headset. However, judging by his words, he is the chosen one for an Atlanta High School. Isn’t that really awesome? The city from where you started your NFL journey has now offered you another chapter—this time as a head coach.

On Friday, Atlanta’s high school Pace Academy announced the arrival of their fourth coach in program history, Sean Weatherspoon. “Coach Weatherspoon comes to Pace with the highest praise from former teammates, coaches, and leaders within the Falcons organizations. His passion for the game is undeniable, but what truly sets him apart is his deep commitment to community and his dedication to developing well-rounded student-athletes who become prepared, confident citizens of the world.” Once a former linebacker himself, who spent 4 years in Atlanta.

Weatherspoon will now train young football minds who also dream of playing for the Falcons as he did. Like he won’t just be a coach to them. Sean will surely serve as a role model who knows what it means to be a Falcon.

And it’s not like Weatherspoon doesn’t have any experience as a coach. Since retiring from the gridiron in 2017, Weatherspoon has served as a trainer at Legacy Sports Complex in Suwanee, GA. So, he already has a bit of an idea of what it means to be a coach. Yes, he might still be raw. However, Weatherspoon has that hunger not only to develop himself as a coach but also the young players who will now be under his tutelage.

“My goal is to build a football program that reflects Pace’s high academic standards—one that is demanding, disciplined, and character-driven. More than just developing great players. I want to help shape young men.” If so, he needs to get to work right away. Because Pace Academy is just coming off a 4-6 record last season. And with the arrival of someone like Weatherspoon, the expectations will now be a lot more than just delivering winning seasons. Well, actually, he isn’t the only ex-Falcon to land a job outside of the NFL. Former Falcons QB Michael Vick was also announced as the new head coach of Norfolk State.

Michael Vick leaves his punditry to develop young players

Vick left his seven-year career as an analyst with Fox Sports to move back to his hometown and join a program that has historically underperformed. Actually, Vick was never a man who shied away from testing his limits. Be it his rushing yards records with the Falcons, where he refused to stay in the pocket and find his targets. Or him winning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2010. Vick also likes to come out of his comfort zone and see where it takes him. However, this challenge with Norfolk State could be a bit different than him running with the ball to the red zone. He will have to turn around a program’s fortune that has made the playoffs one time since 1997.

What’s your perspective on:

Are ex-Falcons like Weatherspoon and Vick the key to reviving high school and college football?

Have an interesting take?

Going back to the last 5 coaches before Vick, all of them had losing records. So, the pressure will be on him to deliver without having any prior experience as a coach. Like he said, “It’s a lot of pressure being in your hometown. I’ve always thrived off it.” Well, the Spartans will be hoping someone who simply revolutionized the QB position from his time on the gridiron can also change their program’s fortunes.

Yes, he and Weatherspoon might need some time because it’s a lot different than playing yourself. However, there’s no doubt both are going to succeed in one way or the other. Whether it’s next season, the season after, or somewhere down the future. W is inevitable for the ex-Falcons!!
