People have mixed opinions on who the greatest of all time in basketball history is, with Michael Jordan and LeBron James consistently topping the list. Similarly, football has evolved to such a pinnacle that fans debate over two NFL HCs as the GOAT. Can you guess who they are? There’s always been a rivalry between three-time Super Bowl winner Andy Reid and six-time Super Bowl winner Bill Belichick. While your personal choice may differ, Belichick and Reid have undeniably been central figures in NFL history.
The debate sparked once again when Mike Golic Jr. asked Jon “Stugotz” Weiner about a similar comparison involving ‘Gojo and Golic’. Golic Jr. posed the question, saying, “Don Shula, I feel, often gets overlooked in modern times because what we have with Andy Reid and Bill Belichick feels very much like the NFL’s version of the LeBron-Jordan debate, right?” Without hesitation, Stugotz responded. If you’re a hardcore Chiefs fan, you might not like his reply—but he addressed one of the most significant debates in sports.
“Don Shula largely, I feel like, does, at least in the modern times, get left out of this because what we have with Andy Reid and Bill Belichick does feel very much like the NFL version of the LeBron-Jordan debate, right?” @mikegolicjr

Stugotz responded to Mike’s question, “Yeah, it kind of is. I mean, listen, if I’m being serious, yes, it’s LeBron and Jordan. The answer is always Jordan, right? I think with Andy Reid or Bill Belichick, the answer is always going to be Bill Belichick, isn’t it?” When the Jordan-LeBron debate arises, the consensus often leans toward the Chicago Bulls legend over LeBron. Similarly, the Reid-Belichick debate tends to favor the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach, Bill Belichick. But why did Golic Jr. ask that question? Was it a genuine curiosity or just a spur-of-the-moment remark?
The real debate started when Sports Illustrated brought up Belichick’s career victories compared to Don Shula and Andy Reid. Don Shula, former Dolphins head coach, has 347 NFL victories whereas Bill Belichick falls short of 14 games with the record of 333 victories. Maybe Bill needs one more NFL season at least to overtake Shula’s record. However, the Chiefs’ HC has recorded 296 NFL victories, including this season. It seems Reid will overtake Shula in a couple of seasons!
Despite this, it’s harder to pick a clear GOAT in NFL history, just like the NBA. Still, it’s worth diving into the records and stats of the top contenders in the debate.
NFL GOAT debate: Bill Belichick vs Andy Reid
You may know this fact that the 66-year-old Chiefs head coach has been in the NFL game since 1992. But did you know that he kicked off his head coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles before tearing the league apart with the Kansas City Chiefs? Yeah, that’s right. But after a successful journey with the Eagles, he stuck around in Kansas City for more than a decade. That looks kinda unachievable if someone has just started his head coaching journey. After parting ways with Philly, he signed on with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. Since then, he has snagged two Lombardi Trophies, bringing his personal total to three. Oh, and he’s made it to the Super Bowl a whopping seven times—pretty wild, right?

If we put Reid’s stats aside for a moment and check out Belichick’s career, you’re definitely going to freak out. This 72-year-old hasn’t just been doing the head coaching thing since way back in 1991; he’s also engraved his name into on staggering six Super Bowl championships. Bill’s worked with two powerhouse teams, including the Cleveland Browns, and crushed out every single team in the NFL after taking charge of the Patriots. And guess what? His journey isn’t over yet—he’s confirmed that he’s stepping into college football to coach North Carolina. The guy’s got six titles under his belt and has made it to the Super Bowl an insane nine times. Sure, Bill’s ahead in wins and Super Bowls, but the fierce rivalry between the two is seriously insane.
Though Stugotz has opined his favorite GOAT contender, the debate will go on. But one thing is clear: the debate will always be between Bill Belichick and Andy Reid.
