Fathers love and adore their children. It’s a matter of great pride for a father to go praise his son in front of the entire world. This is what William Sanders did for his son Barry Sanders. Barry, who was known for being humble and not hogging the limelight, got the attention of cameras through his father.

In a recent Amazon Prime video documentary- “Bye Bye Barry”, the former Lions running back turned the clock to yesteryears. It showcases the moments when the legendary ex-NFL player first came onto the scene and the attention from the media. There was an interesting backstory on how Barry’s father had a great role to play in promoting his son.

If two words can describe Barry in a nutshell would be humble and not attention-seeking. For a player who played in the golden late 80s Lions’ side, there was an interesting revelation made by the NFL stalwart. In his documentary, “Bye Bye Barry”, the former player revealed his father’s enthusiasm for promoting his son. “I’m so proud of what’s happened to Barry. I know Barry don’t….Barry don’t want it. He wants it, he wants it for his father.” Narrated a chuffed Williams regarding his son.

Williams who himself was a carpenter and a businessman, understood the importance of marketing. Moreover, he threw his weight behind his son who had a knack for being camera-shy and humble. Williams further highlighted what his son’s achievements meant to him and the family. “Because he knows how I feel about him and my friends back in Wichita.”

Barry too pointed out that his father was his own man and wanted to share his opinions on a host of things including his son. There are a variety of things and anecdotes that the former player shares in his recent documentary.

Finally, the Lions legend Barry Sanders was an iconic player back in the day. A certified legend, he ushered in the golden period of Lions’ history in the late 80′ to the 90’s decade. However, several questions remain poised in her illustrious career. Amongst these was the unnatural retirement of the running back from the NFL when he was in his prime.

Touted as the “greatest mystery in sports history”, the docuseries “Bye Bye Barry” provides some clarity. It focuses on his entire career, from getting drafted as the third overall pick in the 1989 draft to now, and on his personal relationships, especially with his father.

William Sanders played the fatherly role to perfection and gave his son the credit he richly deserved. It’s great to see a proud father showing love for his son to go ahead and achieve greatness.
