During his heyday, Jerry Rice was known for his brutal training. He would run up the hills for two and a half miles and for the last 800 meters, he would bolt as fast as he could. This helped him build his endurance, lower-body strength, speed and stamina. In fact, Rice and his San Francisco 49ers teammates would do this activity together three times a week during the off-season and keep a record of their times for the sake of improvement. So if the legendary WR is giving you advice, you better listen to him.

Here’s the thing: With a win against the Steelers in Week 17, the Chiefs clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. So there is almost no consequence if they lose to the Broncos on Sunday. No wonder head coach Andy Reid has decided to rest Patrick Mahomes. This strategy makes sense, right? But it seems not everyone is happy with it. Take Jerry Rice for instance.

In a story on Instagram, Rice shared a picture of himself, where he looked all suited up and settled in his flight seat. But what caught our attention was the caption. He wrote, “GOATS DON’T REST.”

Sure, he could have been referring to himself, considering it looked like he was traveling for work. But the timing of his story was too suspicious. You see, a lot of analysts have been talking about the Chiefs’ decision to rest Mahomes against the Broncos and if you read between the lines, Rice’s story could very well be hinting at his displeasure with this decision.

Jerry Rice is literally the GOAT of wide receivers. He played 20 seasons, snagged three Super Bowl rings, and set a bunch of records that are basically untouchable. We’re talking nearly 23,000 receiving yards and 197 touchdowns. Even though he has retired, he is still out here giving the younger guys some wisdom on how to stay at the top.

However, not everyone is on the same page as him. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has made his decision. He is resting his stars—including Mahomes—because he is looking ahead to the bigger picture: playoffs. Maybe it’s a different strategy, but it could pay off when the postseason kicks off.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Mahomes risking his GOAT status by resting, or is Reid's strategy the smart play?

Will Andy Reid’s gamble directly help the Broncos?

Why is Andy Reid sitting out his best players? Well, he’s thinking about the future and that’s good. Instead of pushing his starters through one last game, he is giving them a break to be fresh for the playoffs. Carson Wentz is stepping in as QB, and other key players are getting some much-needed rest.

It is all about staying ready for the real grind and for Reid, it wasn’t a tough decision.

It wasn’t a hard decision. I’ve been through it before… It gives the other guys an opportunity to grow.” But, here’s the thing—this move is risky and could hand the Broncos a golden chance.

With Mahomes and other big names sitting out, the Broncos’ odds of snagging a win just shot up. It’s already above 80% according to NFL standings. They will surely take advantage of this chance if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. But Reid’s decision will impact many other teams as well.

As we already discussed, the Broncos need a win in order to qualify for the playoffs. However, the Dolphins need a Broncos loss and a win over the Jets in Week 18 to make the playoffs. Then the Bengals need to defeat the Steelers AND also need the Broncos and Dolphins to lose their respective games.

If the Broncos pull off the win, not only does it end the Chiefs’ win streak, but it also gives Denver some serious momentum for the playoffs. The Chiefs might be playing the long game, but they are essentially risking their win streak and might end the season on a bad note. But in the end, it is the head coach’s decision.
