J.J. McCarthy has emerged as one of the most promising quarterbacks in the current class. He has drawn comparisons to legends like Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady for his ability to make plays under pressure. Despite starting significantly fewer games than his counterparts, McCarthy averages a 72.3% completion rate and 22 passing touchdowns in his junior season. He has captured the attention of many NFL scouts due to his athleticism, arm strength, and poise on the field.

Some huge compliments came from his ex-coach Jim Harbaugh, dubbing him as the “greatest quarterback in college football history”  which has added up to his hype. At the NFL combine recently, Michael Barret, the LB at Michigan, also heaped praises on JJ McCarthy, saying, “He’s the kind of player, that Patrick Mahomes type, where he can make a play at any moment. You can’t sleep on him when you think he’s down. He’ll throw a ball outta his butt, for real.” Adding up to his comments humorously while also appreciating McCarthy’s immaculate abilities, he metaphorically also said, “He’ll throw a ball out of his butt.

Potential quarterback options for the Patriots

With the New England Patriots getting the third overall pick in the 2024 Draft, there are many options on their books. Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and Justin Fields have all emerged as potential options for the Patriots. Another name on the cards is Bo Nix from Oregon. However, Jayden Daniels might not be available if the Commanders decide to pick him as the second pick. This means they could potentially make a move for Nix, who brings a wealth of experience to the team, starting a record-setting 61 games during college. Nix has also been heavily linked to the Denver Broncos.

Drake Maye is also expected to go in the first round, making it harder for the Patriots to make a move for him. However, Justin Fields remains an exciting option who could be in question for the Patriots as a potential quarterback successor for the franchise. He edges Nix regarding average air yards per throw and his ability to consistently stretch the field for deep throws. While Nix offers a polished approach for the Patriots, his limitations are still in question compared to other targets.
