Travis Hunter indeed needs support. You’d think the two-way star winning the 2024 Heisman Trophy would have merited some well-deserved shut-eye but fate has it that he navigates a difficult time and sees his relationship with his fiancée Leanna Lenee become a subject of twisted, and the worst of all, public indulgence. The controversy began when a video surfaced, implying that Leanna Lenee had been in communication with another man while she and Hunter were already in a committed relationship. Hunter, whose desperate plea to clarify they have been together for five years, now faces conflicting accounts of the case, with some claiming the messages were from 2020, while others argue that they date back to 2022. If that wasn’t enough, more transpired at the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
Talk about reading too much into it. Fisting punches in the air and standing third in line, Deion Sanders stood to welcome Hunter in his arms as his name was announced. And the video live from the Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City suggested that it took a signalling coming from the Colorado head coach for Lenee to do the same. Days after this, an embattled Hunter said, “They want me to be unhappy. It’s draining, for sure, but I don’t even care no more.” But Colorado head coach Deion Sanders cared. Probably that is why he had a special something to say to Hunter. Randy Moss followed suit.
Coach Prime posted a video with Hunter and said, “I want you to know this in front of everybody. You know we love you, we got you. We appreciate you. You are him.” His teammates too shouted ‘blessed’ many times. Meanwhile, Randy Moss, amid his battle against cancer, also retweeted this video along with a 3-word heartfelt message, “BLESS HIM 3X [2x heart emoji]“. Looking at Hunter’s crisis it seems that the notes of encouragement came at the right time.

Social media also sat down to discuss an awkward hug the two shared on the field following the Buffaloes’ final regular-season game. Hunter responded to the criticism during an appearance on an episode of “The Pivot Podcast,” hosted by former NFL stars Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder. “She might look irritated towards me, but at the same time, there’s a lot of stuff she deals with during the game,” Hunter told the podcast hosts. “There’s a lot of stuff people don’t see.” However, Sanders has all his support for Hunter.

When speaking to the media ahead of Colorado’s Alamo Bowl appearance against the BYU Cougars, head coach Deion Sanders was asked how Hunter is doing amid the negative wave of attention on social media. Coach Prime, who has served as a mentor for Hunter since high school, used the opportunity to praise Hunter for the person he is off the field.
“Everything is great, he has the Heisman Trophy at the crib,” Sanders said. “He’s projected to be the first or second pick, no later than the third. I don’t know where all the bulljunk comes in at. I think it’s all a blessing, the things you may count as stressing is still a blessing,” he further added.
“I think he’s heading in the right direction. He loves the game of football. I’m always focused on the positives, not the negatives. It’s so easy to see the negative when the positive is right there in front of you.” Shedeur Sanders also spoke out about the criticism Hunter and Lenee are facing, calling out entertainers and athletes for using Hunter’s name and relationship for attention. Moss does not seem to have missed all these which prompted him to come forward with his support even amid his own crisis.

It was sure to make everyone know that he missed them, too. During the week 15 game against the Bears on December 16, former WRs Jake Reed and Cris Carter walked into the field for the coin toss, with a Moss No. 84 Vikings jersey held high. The fans in attendance shouted, “Ran-dy, Ran-dy.” After the Vikings WR Justin Jefferson scored a touchdown, he pointed to the camera and yelled, “We love you Randy! That’s for you.” Even Deion Sanders offered his good wishes. And they have a special connection.
Let’s take you back to the Thanksgiving game in 1998. Vikings’ Randy Moss scored 3 touchdowns in 3 catches with 163 yards, leaving Deion Sanders’ Cowboys stunned. That’s when the connection between the two began. Just a few days back, Coach Prime sent messages of support to the former WR. After a successful surgery, Moss is ready to make a quick comeback and is keeping an eye on what’s happening in the football world.
