Lewis Hamilton's record-breaking win after 945 days—Is he the GOAT of motorsports?

Draw the curtains and pop the champagne! The king of F1 is back with a bang at the British Grand Prix. A name that we all well know and remember, the same name that stands out in the current generation of racers, has returned home like a prodigal son and is lifting the championship trophy along with it. This is Lewis Hamilton and his grand comeback after 945 days.

After his last win in 2021, Hamilton suffered at the hands of a controversial decision at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and it cost him what would have been his eighth title. Though later it was denoted to be a “human error” by the officials, it definitely played a major role in Hamilton’s mental block and the 3-year drought that was soon to come. Now, it looks like the struggle is over and the rains are here, and at the gates of victory stands Tom Brady, who wished the racer good wishes upon his massive milestone.

On 7th July 2024, Lewis Hamilton marked his iconic win at the British Grand Prix for the 9th time and the world of F1 is rejoicing with him. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the champion reel in a trophy and perhaps it might be because of all the blunders of McLaren and the struggle of the Red Bull RB20 but it’s going to be a celebration in Hamilton’s country, nonetheless.

From one legend to another, Tom Brady stepped in to congratulate the racer thoroughly when he wrote, “Congratulations!!! Amazing” under Lewis’ post which has already garnered over 588,998 likes in 24 minutes. Hamilton has raked in his 9th championship after a 3-year drought, 945 days to be precise. It has never meant more for the world champion and the fans know it too, as they all bow down in front of the king of the circuit. With all that said, here are Hamilton’s words on why he shed tears for the first time after a win and why this victory is unlike any other.

There were times in the past when Hamilton lost belief in his own abilities. Due to the poor performances that continued to haunt his steering wheel over the past 2 seasons, Hamilton feared that he might never win again and as a result, had severe mental health issues to deal with as well. The two-year streak with no Formula One win comes to an end today and along with it, tears ran down Hamilton’s cheeks, the first of its kind.

In an emotional post-match interview, Hamilton looked to be sentimental, more so than anything we’ve ever seen throughout his career. He talked about the win and said, “To have this feeling coming across the line, honestly, I’ve never cried coming from a win. It just came out of me. It’s a really, really great feeling. I’m very, very grateful for it.” The historic win has certainly brought viewers like us who are watching at home, to the brink of tears as well, which just goes to show the massive impact that Hamilton has had on the world with his talents and what this feat of his means to the millions of supporters around the world.
