If there is anything that 33-year-old Mexican undisputed super middleweight boxing champion, Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez, and 46-year-old five Super Bowl MVP title holder, Tom Brady, have in common, it would be discipline. Both athletes have etched an envious record of being the best in their respective fields and recently connected over their common secret to success. 

On Monday’s episode of “Let’s Go!” [Season III] co-hosted by former Arizona Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray, and the legendary NFL quarterback Brady himself, Alvarez sheds considerable light on the pro tacts that have saved him from being knocked out in any of his matches so far and how he has been preparing to defend his super middleweight title against Jermell Charlo in an eagerly awaited 168-pound bout scheduled for Saturday, September 30.

“I am ready:” Alvarez shares his winning secret 

The Mexican boxing sensation who sold ice cream for a living in his teen years has quickly escalated to one of the highest-paid sportsmen on the planet. On “Let’s Go!” Larry Fitzgerald asked, “Every fight I ask you are you ready and what have you told me since you were fifteen years old?” Alvarez was quick to reply, “I was born ready.” His confidence which is an outcome of discipline and mastered skills are the key ingredients to becoming “a true champion”.  

“I always try to do my best and it works,” said the undisputed champion. A simple formula that is followed by Brady himself and displays his support by applauding Alvarez, “Love watching you!” Brady is full of praise, calling him, “an amazing competitor,” “humble, and hard-working,” someone who has “done great things for his community,” and “represents his country so well.”

“Real competitors”, according to Brady, love watching Alvarez since he is able to bring out the best in himself, something all great competitors have in common. The other thing that comes naturally to the boxing champ, that is fundamental for success in any field, is discipline.

It is interesting to know that the moniker by which the majority in the boxing world recognize the WBC and WBA world super-middleweight champion originates from his fiery red hair. ‘Canelo,’ translates to ‘cinnamon’ in Spanish, and is a term of endearment often used for Mexicans with red hair. And it was his red hair that led Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez to boxing.

Individuals with red locks have a history of being treated with prejudice. Alvarez had his share of experience with bullying in his teenage years, conditioning him to fight back, and in effect revealing his talent. He was introduced to boxing at the age of thirteen when his elder brother stitched together his first-ever boxing gloves and sparred with an opponent four years his senior at a gym. Eddie Reynoso, who still serves as his trainer, recalls how the young talent had “dominated” in that early gym session.

Alvarez is all set to defend his super middleweight title in a much-anticipated 168-pound showdown against Jermell Charlo, set to take place on Saturday, September 30. Jermell Charlo has recorded a five-win streak at 154 pounds while the Mexican legend has maintained his record of never being knocked out in any of his matchups.
