During Tom Brady’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction, Patrick Mahomes was at the receiving end of jeers during his address. While those boos may have confused some, Mahomes gave Brady’s fans reason to come after him after his comments about the legendary QB’s career resurfaced.
Mahomes has won three Super Bowls at age 28 and is a strong contender to surpass Brady’s legacy of seven Super Bowl rings. If Mahomes plays as long as Brady did, there is a good chance he might do it. But is the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback willing to go down that route?

During an interview with TIME magazine on April 16, Mahomes talked about how his family commitments will dictate how long he remains in the sport. He said, “I’ve looked, if I played until Tom [Brady]’s age, my daughter would be 19, 20 years old and clarified, “I would love to play that long. At the same time, I want to be there for my daughter.”
Brady stayed in the game till the age of 45, a rarity, and played for 23 seasons amassing all sorts of records. If he keeps his performances and fitness up, it won’t be impossible to imagine Mahomes playing in the NFL in his 40s. However, he emphasized, “But if I feel like it’s taking away from my family time, that’s when I’ll know it’s time to go.”
People close to Mahomes have praised the quarterback regarding his plans to retire early. His mother, Randi, appeared on the June 21 edition of “The Mom Game” podcast. She talked about how she missed some of his son’s games due to work, but praised him for showing commitment to his family, “I hear him you know, make comments like, ”If the game takes away from my kids, I might not play as long as Tom Brady,” and I’m like, I’m so proud of him for that.”

Patrick Mahomes has two children with his wife Brittany- a daughter Sterling Skye, 3, and a son, Bronze, who is 19 months old.
However, when Mahomes’ comments resurfaced on Instagram in a post by patrickmahomesfanarmy, fans didn’t take kindly to his words. Brady has been very vocal about his love for his kids and now ex-wife, Gisele Bündchen. Despite his divorce from Bundchen, he has made efforts to co-parent their children. Even during his playing days, Brady stressed that he was focused on taking care of his family and children first.
Hence, the comments from Mahomes, led to fan backlash over the mention of Brady when it came to balancing a long career with family.
“Nothing wrong with a man working,” Fans ask Mahomes not to drag Brady into the discussion
Fans had much to say about Mahomes’ comments. One fan pointed out that Mahomes shouldn’t bring Brady into the mix. “It really is each family’s own decision shouldn’t bring TB into it,” they said.
Brady had a long and successful career during which he managed to keep a balance between his NFL duties and family. The legendary QB has three children, out of which two were with Bundchen. Brady has admitted to being only focused on football early on but changing his priorities over time and wanting to be there for his kids.
Another user was harsher, saying, “Nothing to do with family. You don’t have the discipline.” Brady made playing in the 40s look easy. With a shredded physique and a fitness level that would rival a rookie, he carried his NFL career till the age of 45 before retiring at the end of the 2022 season. He won his last Super Bowl at the age of 43 in 2021, the oldest player to do so. This level of commitment doesn’t come easy and Mahomes, 28 surely has a long way to go. In his TIME interview, Mahomes even admitted that he would have to “get rid of this dad bod if I want to play to 45.”
A fan appreciated Mahomes’ sentiment but also highlighted that Tom Brady’s approach to his career and family life is equally commendable. “That’s awesome, but so is what Tom did. Tom’s kids love him and look up to him. Nothing wrong with a man working.”

As he announced his retirement, in a heartfelt Instagram post, Brady expressed his gratitude for his ex-wife, Bündchen, and their children, calling them his greatest achievement. “Our family is my greatest achievement. I always came off the field and home to the most loving and supportive wife who has done EVERYTHING for our family to allow me to focus on my career.” This again highlights that Brady was good at handling an illustrious NFL career alongside family commitments.
Another fan pointed out the difference between the marriages of Mahomes and Brady. “There’s a difference. Brady didn’t marry or have kids at the beginning of his career.“ While Brady was already a parent and had a kid with ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan, he married Bundchen in 2009, when he was 31. This was eight years after his pro debut. On the contrary, Mahomes was 27 when he married Brittany in 2022, while the two had a kid a year earlier.
Finally, a user was much less impressed with Mahomes’ long-term career outlook, stating, “We already know you’re not going to play that long anyway. Tom Brady was an outlier.”

Brady also has five Super Bowl MVPs compared to Mahomes’ three and is a three-time MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the Year. His seven Super Bowl rings will take some time to surpass even with the Chiefs and Mahomes winning three of the last five Super Bowls. But his ability and the fact he is part of such a strong team means he will be up there for the GOAT debate with Brady before it’s all said and done. Could this be a reason why Patriots fans booed him when he congratulated Brady in a video message during his Patriots Hall of Fame ceremony on June 12? Well, who knows? What we do know is that fans won’t take lightly Brady being put into a conversation about not being committed to family.
As the conversation continues, it becomes evident that Mahomes and Brady each have a unique style on and off the field. While Mahomes is set on the present, Brady’s career represents a standard of longevity in the NFL.
