Bromance? Joe Montana and Jerry Rice know it the best. Throughout their years at the 49ers, Rice and Montana developed a deep friendship, one where they understand and joke about each other on air. Jason Fitz, the Yahoo reporter, had the time of his life while interviewing Joe Montana and Joe Borrow, the then and now leading QBs of the pro league.
Jerry Rice made a friendly confession about his old friend Montana in his previous interview with Yahoo Sports, and Fitz couldn’t stop himself from asking Montana his reaction to it. It was a dating confession. “If I could have, I would have dated you,” Rice had confessed, highlighting the chemistry of the QB-receiver duo of the 49ers. Montana’s response was something you would expect from a friend when asked a question like this, “He’s too ugly for me,” Montana laughed off. Joe Borrow, sitting beside him, also could hardly contain his smile. Fitz, on the other hand, was hollering. However, Montana did not miss the opportunity to present the deep understanding between him and his former teammate.

“Sometimes you a receiver comes along that just there’s something easy about him to read when they’re making their break when they’re like Jerry. He’s really, really easy to read and when you have someone like that, he makes good decisions. Because our guys always had to read defenses,” Montana explained, highlighting the role of Rice in some of the most pivotal movements that made them Jerry Rice-Joe Montana today. This made Fitz wonder if Joe Burrow had found the Jerry Rice to his Joe Montana or not. The nearest guess was Ja’Marr Chase since the Bengals QB-receiver duo has displayed a slow yet steady rise in numbers.
Ja’Marr Chase: The Rice to Joe Borrow’s Montana?
During the 38 games they have played together, Chase and Burrow have scored 237 catches for 3,308 yards with 28 touchdowns. The Bengals drafted Chase as the fifth overall in the 2021 draft, whereas Burrow was drafted just a year before Chase by the Bengals as the first overall. However, it wasn’t the first time the two would be playing together.

Their QB-WR relationship dates back to their LSU days, where the two led LSU to win the 2020 CFP National Championship over a 42-25 victory against Clemson. Burrow also became the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner, being deemed the best QB ever in college football by several analysts. Moreover, they even led the Bengals to a Super Bowl appearance in 2021 after the franchise’s last appearance in 1998, all of this within just 3 years of companionship with the Bengals. A few more years down the line, fans are likely to witness the new Jerry Rice- Joe Montana.
