It’s always the last 3 points where the 49ers falter. Around 12 years ago, it was against the Ravens where Colin Kaepernick and Co. made a blockbuster comeback against the Ravens, yet ended up tainting their undefeated Super Bowl streak to 5-1 because of the 34-31 loss. Fast forward to the Super Bowl LVIII, where Brock Purdy fell victim to the same last 3 decisive points in the game, turning the game in the Chiefs’ favor with their 25-22 loss.

The Super Bowl rivalry between the Chiefs and the 49ers dates back to 2019 when Shakira and JLo’s halftime show shunned the whole world. However, this time, it was Brock Purdy who was looking down the barrel of several guns, especially Shannon Sharpe and Ocho Cinco’s because of the final Patrick Mahomes’s 3-yard pass to Mecole Hardman Jr, which became ‘the’ decisive factor of the game. During their podcast ‘Nightcap’ Sharpe and Uncle Cinco expressed why Purdy was ‘not the guy’. “The 4ers had the momentum in the first half. They dominated the first half of the game but they only had a temporary lead,” expressed they, referring to the 10-3 dominating score of the 49ers till halftime.

“You needed to disappear because you got the momentum. When you get into a situation like that, you have to put some separation between you. When you look at the second half, you think, ‘Ya’ll try to keep Purdy up’ because you want people to think he’s the dude. He’s not that dude,” claimed Sharpe. Safe to say, Purdy’s hard-earned irrelevance from his name of ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ is at stake with this second consecutive loss against the Chiefs. In 2019, the loss was even worse, with the Chiefs cornering the Niners with their massive 31 score against the Niners 20. This time, Purdy did try to maintain their dominance but failed in front of Mahomes and CO.

The 180 in the second half

The game took a straight-up 180 turn in the 3rd quarter. Harrison Butker’s 57-yard field goal set the Chiefs up for their comeback with a solid 6-10 against the Niners. Moreover, it was Marquez Valdez-Scantling’s 16-yard catch from Patrick Mahomes, which edged the score to 13-10.

In the fourth quarter, Harrison Butker again dominated with his 24-yard and 29-yard field goal, sending both teams into overtime with 19-19. In the OT, Jake Moody’s 27-yard field goal did give them a boost, totaling their score to 22, Mahomes outshone all with his last pass, etching the Chiefs’ name as the Super Bowl LVIII Champions.
