Former NFL HC Jay Gruden takes up the scrutiny in working out the common ground between Williams and Mahomes. Per Gruden’s analysis, Williams boasts two traits crucial for success in the quarterback position — pocket awareness and ball security. Like Mahomes, he displays a keen sense of spatial awareness. As pointed out by Gruden, “But really the thing that intrigues you most about Caleb Williams’ ability to step up in the pocket he looks left looks for the high crossers not there then he breaks down and makes place outside the pocket off schedule throws. That’s what people compare him to Patrick Mahomes.”

Williams’ scrutiny continued, “… For because of his ability to do things off schedule. Plays break down he steps up he’s got pretty good pocket awareness he has good ball security at times.” Besides Gruden, analysts like Colin Cowherd highlighted Williams’ elite-level vision and accuracy, reminiscent of Mahomes’ playing style.

USC head coach Lincoln Riley, who had coached Williams in Sooners and Trojans, shed light on how the quarterback still has to travel a long path that lies ahead to catch up to Mahomes. He stated, “Caleb certainly has some of the same physical tools which is exciting because there’s not many people that have that. But certainly, to continue to climb to a guy to like his level, there’s going to be a big process there. I certainly wouldn’t put it past him. Excited, hopefully, he can end up in a great situation and take advantage of it anywhere to the level that Pat has done.”

The recent episode of the show The Next Patrick Mahomes presented the Williams-Mahomes contest as an unfair burden to place on a young prospect. For every success story like Mahomes, who was selected as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, there is a cautionary tale like JaMarcus Russell. The player had entered the league with immense hype and was the first overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Later, he struggled to perform, leading the Oakland Raiders to release him in 2010.
