Tom Brady’s retirement doesn’t change the fact that he’s a seven-time Super Bowl champion. That’s why former NFL player Matt McChesney believes the San Francisco 49ers should sign Brady to lead their team to victory. The 49ers suffered a devastating Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs this year in a nail-biting overtime battle. It’s also a painful echo of their 2020 defeat to the same team, which shows their struggle to overcome the Patrick Mahomes’ offense.
McChesney argues that this pattern will probably continue if 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t address the quarterback situation. While the team has potential, Brady’s experience and leadership could take them to the next level. Can the 49ers make it happen?

McChesney predicts the 49ers will need Tom Brady to win
Coach Kyle Shanahan is under pressure to find the 49ers’ star quarterback in less than two weeks. Meanwhile, talks continue with their franchise QB Brock Purdy, whose contract extension is crucial for the upcoming season. While this pressure is on, a former NFL player, Matt McChesney, bluntly states, “How many times last year did we say San Francisco would get to the edge and they’ll lose because they don’t have the guy at quarterback?” He added, “That’s gonna happen again next year too.”
McChesney also gave a bold solution: “You might as well go and pay Tom Brady for a year. I’m dead serious!” To compete with Patrick Mahomes and reach the Super Bowl, the 49ers might need more than Purdy — perhaps even the legendary Brady himself.
Kyle Shanahan almost landed Brady
Imagine Tom Brady playing against Patrick Mahomes and leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl victory. It could have almost happened. Coach Kyle Shanahan openly admitted he wanted Brady as the team’s starting quarterback for the 2023 season. He even had a conversation with Brock Purdy, acknowledging that Brady might take the starting role. The situation unfolded when Purdy suffered a horrible elbow injury in the NFC title game.
Unsure if Purdy would recover in time, Shanahan sought out a backup plan – and that plan was Tom Brady. He explained to Purdy, “I let him know he’s our guy long-term. No question. And if Tom Brady wanted to come here and start for one year, that’s the only way you’re not starting when you’re healthy this year.” While Brady didn’t join the 49ers, they still reached the Super Bowl with Purdy at the helm. However, the final result shows they might need an extra edge to get the ultimate title. Could Brady have been the missing piece for a 49ers championship?
