Fans are looking up to the recently hired Los Angeles Chargers OC as he reflects on the most crucial player in the new system. Appearing on YouTube in conversation with Hayley Elwood, he seemed to be very hopeful about the rising star, Herbert. Roman shared his first impression of Herbert commending his intelligence and attentiveness: “I met him the other day or last week actually, got to spend some time with him. It was great. What a really sharp human being, smart, attentive, really, really. I think he’s going to be able to really dive into this system and take it over and make it his own.”

Having prior experience working with quarterbacks known for possessing a cerebral approach, Roman declared that he would be the guide for Herbert, tapping into the player’s mental prowess. The coach explained, “So if you have a guy that’s cerebral like that and you find out where the margins are you know you really try to develop and tap into that. And you know with him it might turn might end up a bunch of different ways but you know because he has that kind of ability, us as coaches it’s our job to identify that and bring it to life.” This takes the fans down memory lane to Roman’s stint with the Ravens and his role in Jackson’s success.

Much before Herbert, it was Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson who witnessed success following the path paved by the then coach, Roman. In 2019, he took up the role of OC for Baltimore and ushered in the Jackson era. The impact has been immediate and monumental since the player eventually basked in success and glory. Jackson won the NFL MVP as a full-time starter in his inaugural season.

However, this was not the end, as his success spree under Roman’s tutelage continued, with him winning his second MVP award at the 2023 NFL Honors. With this, the Ravens’ success continued as other than Jackson, in the last season, four players rushed for 400 or more, including Kenyan Drake, J.K. Dobbins, and RB Gus Edwards. With this, the program produced the league’s third-best yards-per-carry average, 5.17.

Hence, over the years, Roman has carved out a niche as one of the top offensive play callers in the NFL. Particularly adept at harnessing the skills, especially for dual-threat quarterbacks, now it is to be seen whether his stint in the Chargers will reach the peak of success as it did with the Ravens.
