Home/College Football

Once upon a time, there was a young boy in Newport News, Virginia, who spent his afternoons watching “Prime Time” Deion Sanders electrify the NFL. For that boy, nothing symbolized greatness more than the Nike Air Diamond Turf 1 sneakers that Sanders made iconic in the ’90s. He dreamed of owning a pair, imagining the swagger he’d feel stepping into shoes worn by his hero.

That boy grew up to step into some big shoes as Michael Vick, a quarterback who would redefine the position with his blistering speed and unmatched agility. From being the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season to earning four Pro Bowl selections, Vick lived a life of accomplishment that most could only dream of. But through it all, that childhood wish—to own a pair of Sanders’ legendary sneakers—remained just out of reach.

Things have taken a new turn for “Coach Prime” Deion Sanders as he loses out on the bid on the Cowboys’ HC job! However, this has not derailed him from celebrating Michael Vick’s dream, in a heartfelt moment of recognition. Recently, Vick shared a childhood memory, as he admired Sanders’ Nike Air Diamond Turf 1 sneakers. Vick, who is now Norfolk State University’s head coach, after playing 13 seasons in the NFL, indeed couldn’t hide his excitement upon the re-release of the same.

Writing on his Instagram handle, Vick shared a post from Atlanta Falcons, featuring the @deionsanders Nike Diamond Turf 1, as it is re-released on January 24th. Michael Vick wrote a nostalgic caption, mentioning, “Always wanted a pair when I was younger @deionsanders.” Even Deion Sanders re-shared Vick’s elation on his Instagram handle. The iconic cross trainer was Sanders’ first shoe in 1994. The retro version is now available for purchase on Nike.com, priced at $150.

With hints of black, white, red, and metallic gold colors, the sneaker features comfortable cushioning, making it a great fit for daily wear or sports activities. Sanders wore it back in 1994, and the current release of the colorway pays due tribute to Deion Sanders’ early career days with the Atlanta Falcons. Michael Vick and Deion Sanders have shown mutual admiration for each other on multiple occasions, which renders the gesture even more special.

Talking about his deep respect for Sanders’, Vick had remarked, “There’s only one Deion Sanders. His soul, his spirit—the way God created him—it’s unique. Deion is Deion, but I’m Michael Vick,” as stated in The Athlon Sports article from December 2024. He refers to Sanders’ influence as “The Prime Effect,” and now his childhood dream of owning Deion Sanders sneakers has found its day. However, things are a bit under the sun for Deion Sanders, who recently lost out on the HC job.

After the Dallas Cowboys let go of previous HC Mike McCarthy, Deion Sanders seemed to be a prospective choice. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has turned the tables by promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, as the 10th HC of the team. His contract term extends to four years, and in a recent article with USA Today, Jones stated, “Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant. He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Things were a bit different in the past few days, as Deion Sanders was reportedly in contact with Jones. Even Deion had mentioned to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, “To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing…” However, it appears that Jones was not considering the option seriously, as NFL insider Ian Rapoport remarked, “Nothing scheduled yet with Coach Prime. I would be surprised, probably very surprised, if something did in fact get scheduled.” The general consensus is that he’ll step into an NFL coaching role only if he gets to coach his son, Shedeur Sanders. Now, Schottenheimer has placed all speculations to rest as he becomes the 9th HC under Jerry Jones’ ownership since 1989.
