21-Year-Old First Round Draft Pick’s Emotional Moment With Mom Becomes the Highlight Of the NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is one of the most anticipated events in the sports world and for good reason. For many athletes, it’s the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. Sportscenter shared a video of one of the top prospects finally hearing his name on the big board. Quentin Johnston was drafted by Los Angeles Chargers with the 21st pick in this year’s draft. As he sits in the green room, anxiously waiting for his name to be called, the tension is palpable. But when the Chargers select him as the 21st pick in the first round, the room explodes with excitement.

The behind-the-scenes moments of the WR receiving a call from Chargers GM Tom Telesco are sure to strike a chord with everyone watching. It’s rare to see someone’s entire life’s work culminate into one final moment of success. But such is the NFL Draft. Johnston’s announcement asking his mom to retire because ‘he’s got her covered’ was a truly heartwarming moment.

As the draft room of Johnston’s family and friends exploded with joy, the most awe-inspiring moment was the WR’s speech to his mother.  “I just want to give a big shout-out to my mom. She’s gonna be putting her two weeks notice in today. She can retire. I don’t want you working another day.” Johnston’s mother has been the backbone of the young receiver’s journey to the NFL.

The WR entered TCU after being a 4-star recruit out of high school. But throughout his football journey, he was raised and held up by the strength and hard work of his mother behind the scenes. To be able to accomplish his goal of finally reaching the NFL is a fruition of all of the work put in by Johnston and his mother. That, right there, is a truly inspiring story.
