One of the biggest stories this offseason surrounded the future of San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo. The QB who guided his franchise to the Super Bowl just one season ago suddenly finds his future shrouded in uncertainty.

The future of the quarterback became blurry when the franchise traded up to the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Niners GM John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan even came out and said that they would be picking a quarterback with the pick.

While the 49ers landed NDSU’s Trey Lance, the franchise also kept hold of Garoppolo. Recently, Shanahan, in an attempt to douse the fire, said that Garoppolo will be the franchise’s starting QB for 2021.

But the question that remains is, for how long?

Jimmy Garoppolo ready to guide Lance

Garoppolo, so far, has been a model professional regarding the matter. GM Lynce had recently said that Garoppolo was the first Niners player to text Lance once he was drafted.

And recently, while appearing on ESPN’s KJZ, the QB opened up about his reaction to all that has been going on over the past few weeks.

“It’s kind of coming full circle,” Garoppolo said. Referring to Tom Brady and his first few years as a New England Patriots player, Garoppolo said he enjoyed the competition.

“You go through this NFL career and you start as a young guy coming in. Tom kind of showed me the ropes. The competition between us was awesome. It really made me grow as a rookie and as a young player.”

“So, that’s kind of what me and Trey, we’ll mold our relationship into that. But it will happen naturally. It’s one of those things you can’t force anything. Just let it come as it may.”

Jimmy Garoppolo will, by all likelihood, be the Niners’ starter come Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season. But the QB who’s prone to injuries will know that a young, versatile QB will be waiting on the sidelines anytime he falters.
