Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, has held this position since 2006. He ranks second in terms of tenure for this position, following Pete Rozelle, who served from 1960 to 1989. News of a contract extension for Goodell is now making headlines, and the details of his new contract may come as a surprise for his haters.

According to an NFL insider, Joe Pompliano, on X, “Roger Goodell has signed a contract extension to remain NFL commissioner through 2027.” What makes this extension particularly interesting is the financial aspect. The insider also tweeted, “Goodell became commissioner in 2006 and his career earnings will now surpass $700 million — 2x more than any player in NFL history. Not bad work if you can get it.”

With his current contract set to expire, the Commissioner will continue in his role for an additional three years. Previously, some sources suggested Goodell’s earnings to be around $500 million. The specific terms of his contract extension are not publicly disclosed, though.
Historically, attempts have been made to challenge the league office’s former tax-exempt status, which was sometimes falsely used to claim that the NFL and its teams paid no taxes at all. These challenges resulted in changes that allowed the league to keep certain information confidential, including the Commissioner’s compensation.
However, in addition to his critics and detractors, Goodell also has many fans who have taken an interest in the league after his arrival, being a reflection of his popularity.
The man behind the NFL popularity
Roger Goodell’s NFL career began on August 8, 1982 in New York. He worked for the Jets for two seasons before returning to the league office as an assistant in 1984. In 1987, Roger was hired as an assistant under Lamar Hunt, who invented the term “Super Bowl” and founded the Kansas City Chiefs franchise.

On September 1st, 2006, Roger was elected by the NFL members as the eighth commissioner in the history of the NFL. As CEO, Goodell took some fresh approaches for the goodwill of the NFL. He strengthened all 32 teams.
Under his leadership, the NFL’s fan engagement has skyrocketed, driven by a strong online and social media presence, record-setting television ratings, and other significant marketing efforts. During his first seven seasons, he also addressed a wide range of issues, including player health & safety, medical assistance for retired players; ownership matters; revenue distribution; stadium construction; media coverage enhancements; and international development.

The NFF awarded him the Gold Medal as well. Furthermore, during his time, he associated the NFL with multiple channels, making the league the longest television agreement. This further solidifies the NFL’s position as the exclusive major sports league. Now, at 64 years old, Roger Goodell will continue to serve the NFL for some more years.
