The heroes of the Netflix documentary series are set to go head-to-head for the first time. The “NFL’s most underrated quarterback“, Kirk Cousins, as referred to by Patrick Mahomes himself, will face the Young GOAT on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET. It was just a five-minute meet-up in the Quarterback series premiere, but now the two will face off on the field at U.S. Bank Stadium, with records of 3-1 win (Chiefs) and 1-3 loss (Vikings).
It’s not often that the NFC North teams face off against the AFC teams in the regular season, but this time, the Minnesota Vikings have the chance to play against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although it happened once, around four years ago, the rivalry somehow remained tasteless. However, this time it is happening, and surprisingly, it will be a matchup between the most beloved stars of the Quarterback Series on Netflix.

The ‘Quarterback’ Series brought glory, struggle, power, and the legacy of featured quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota. Released on July 12 of this year on Netflix, the $400 million project, produced by Peyton Manning, provided audiences with eight behind-the-scenes episodes. From winning games to struggling with taking photos, Mahomes’ story, both inside and out, was beautifully revealed in the series, earning praise for the Young GOAT. Similarly, for Cousins, from leading his team maturely to allowing his wife to organize his wardrobe, his never-before-seen glimpse of life was liked by the audience.
Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl triumph, Kirk Cousins’ remarkable comeback, and Marcus Mariota’s unexpected benching combined to create moments of both glory and heartache. This mix struck a chord with viewers, turning ‘Quarterback’ into a Netflix sensation. The show achieved remarkable success, attracting 3.3 million viewers and accumulating 21.4 million hours of viewing time. It firmly secured its position among Netflix’s most-watched original streaming series. After the massive success of this docu-series, Manning is in search of other quarterbacks for Season 2. However, without Mahomes, Cousins, and Mariota, the project will surely feel incomplete.
Although Manning’s project brought these two stars together on-screen, little did he know that the two heroes of the series would meet up off-screen on the gridiron for the first time in NFL history.

Patrick Mahomes and Kirk Cousins are poised to share the field for the very first time, just three months after the release of the Netflix ‘Quarterback’ Series. This isn’t the first time the Vikings have faced the Chiefs; back in 2019, when the Chiefs hosted Minnesota in Week 9, Mahomes was dealing with an ankle injury, and veteran Matt Moore started in his place. The game ended with the Chiefs victorious, 26-23, but it was a close match with Moore under center. Now, four years later, history is repeating itself, but this time Mahomes and Cousins will be squaring off against each other. Of course, Mahomes and Cousins won’t actually be “facing” each other on Sunday, as they both play offense. Nevertheless, this matchup has all the ingredients of a sequel to one of the summer’s most popular streaming events. Both quarterbacks are among the top 10 in passing yards, top seven in attempts, and top five in passing touchdowns this season.
In the first four games of 2023, Cousins leads Mahomes in all those categories with 1,214 yards and 11 touchdowns compared to Mahomes’ 1,006 yards and 8 touchdowns. For Cousins, Week 5 presents an opportunity to secure his first career win against K.C. He’s had three previous attempts dating back to 2013, Andy Reid’s first season as the team’s head coach, and he’s 0-3 in those matchups. On the other hand, it’s a chance for Mahomes to secure his first win against the veteran QB Cousins and also his first win at U.S. Bank Stadium. Beyond the statistics, one major factor to watch will be their age difference, with Cousins at 35 and Mahomes at 28, showcasing focused and energetic gameplay, respectively. It’s no surprise that Mahomes is currently regarded as the best quarterback in football, while Cousins, too, isn’t far away. Probably, that’s why Mahomes, once in the Quarterback series, acknowledged that he is “underrated.”

However, it’s essential to clarify that Cousins has already surpassed NFL quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson, both in terms of ranking and passing yardage rating (he’s ranked number 3). So, he isn’t underrated; he’s accurately rated. His rating may change once he makes an appearance in an NFC Championship game.
