The released veteran quickly found his home. But a plot twist occurred just before the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets matchup on Sunday. The Broncos, who hold a 1-3 record in the season so far, are not lagging behind in embracing their youth revolution. Well, Sean Payton is hooked on a feeling that where the team is heading, this decision comes as the best step moving forward.
This movement offers young players more opportunities to play and aims to help the team climb up the leaderboard. As a result, there were reports that Sean Payton and his team would release some players while signing some other young players to the team. However, there’s a twist in the tale, and it’s related to the most highlighted player in the Broncos’ movement: veteran linebacker Randy Gregory.

According to a report by NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, there’s a twist in the Randy Gregory situation. The news that Gregory had been released turned out to be inaccurate. Now, the veteran linebacker is set to join the Denver Broncos’ preseason opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, with whom the Broncos lost by the narrowest of margins, 21-20. Pelissero’s tweet reads, “Plot twist! The #Broncos are trading veteran OLB Randy Gregory to the #49ers, per sources. Denver never formally released Gregory, who now gets a fresh start with a contender in San Francisco.”

Earlier in the week, reports had circulated that the veteran pass rusher, who had signed a lucrative five-year, $70 million deal with the Denver Broncos the previous season, had been released. However, this trade reveals that the 30-year-old is headed to the undefeated San Francisco 49ers, which presents quite a contrast to the struggling Broncos. In exchange for Gregory and a seventh-round pick in the 2024 draft, the Broncos will receive a sixth-round pick in the same draft. It appears that Gregory desired a change of scenery from the Broncos, who currently have a 1-3 record, and this trade affords him that opportunity. The trade had been under consideration for some time as the Broncos had been exploring trade options for Gregory.
Sean Payton said about the decision to move forward, “We felt like with some of our younger players and where we are going, it was best for our team right now.” While this move aligns with the Broncos’ strategy of making roster adjustments and providing opportunities to younger players, there may also be other motivations behind Russell Wilson and Sean Payton’s decision to take this significant step related to Gregory.
Was Randy Gregory not good?

When the Denver Broncos inked the deal with Randy Gregory back in March 2022, they held high hopes for a resurgence in his career. They were vigilant against the possibility of the opposite outcome. Little did they anticipate that it would culminate like this, especially for a player who had grappled with a history of injuries and suspensions. The chapter of Randy Gregory in Denver concluded rather abruptly this past Wednesday when the team communicated his impending release after four underwhelming games. His starting role was relinquished to Nik Bonitto last Sunday, and within a mere three days, he found himself no longer on the roster.
Even though General Manager George Paton and others were cognizant of the risks associated with Gregory’s significant contract, parting ways with the 30-year-old merely a month into the second year of a five-year deal is undoubtedly a substantial letdown and a noteworthy financial misstep. While Gregory’s deal was never realistically expected to span the full five years and $70 million, Denver will ultimately pay him $28 million for just 10 games played. That translates to $9.3 million for each sack he registered in the games and a staggering $1.33 million for each tackle.
