Two totally different worlds collided in Kansas City on the 24th of September. Swifties, so used to their idol owning whichever place she is in, received a jolt to find another queen in Kansas. Brittany Mahomes’ fans (At this point we need a name for her fans as well. “Brittany Army” perhaps?) were enraged to find her rule being threatened by an outsider. But it’s just the fans. We don’t know yet if the two have ever interacted. But people love to indulge in the sexist trope of pitting two women against each other based on jealousy.

Celebrities’ private lives are not really private. Their private lives have bigger consequences. What bearing does the personal relationship of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift have on the Kansas City Chiefs, Swifties, and the NFL? And yes, who really will be the “Queen of Kansas City Chiefs”? As Kelce enters another orbit with the Swift aura, these are the questions that fans would want answers for. 

A primer on Brittany Mahomes for Swifties

For non-American Swifties or even American Swifties who did not care much about football until a few days ago, Kansas City Chiefs is the reigning champions of the NFL. And their quarterback is 2x Super Bowl MVP, Patrick Mahomes. Brittany Mahomes is the wife of Patrick Mahomes. However, you can’t introduce her with just “wife of Patrick Mahomes”. She is a former soccer player and co-owner of the National Women’s Soccer League team, the Kansas City Current.

She is somewhat of a sensation among Chiefs fans. Being a social media personality, her Instagram feed is filled with adorable pictures of her family and her life. Having been a sports person herself, she connects with Mahomes in a way no one can. After his mother, Randi Mahomes, she’s the woman he loves most. 

However, Brittany Mahomes is often under fire for almost anything that she does. But being the strong woman that she is, she has always shut down internet trolls. This is something Taylor Swift and Mahomes share in common. In a Glamour UK interview, she fired down sexist comments about her being a “serial dater”. In a similar vein, the reigning queen of KCC, Brittany also once shot back at netizens for trolling her for her apparent apathy about Patrick’s leg injury. How did this singer and challenger to Brittany’s throne enter the football scene?

A primer on Taylor Swift for… who am I kidding? Taylor Swift does not need an introduction. But if you must, then she is a 12-time Grammy Award winner, has released 10 original studio albums, her concerts are almost always sold out and a Belgian university is offering a course on her lyrics.

On 24 September, Taylor Swift was spotted at Arrowhead Stadium for a football match. Does she watch football? Yes, being from Philadelphia, she’s a huge Eagles fan! But the Eagles weren’t playing that day. She was there to support her rumored boyfriend Travis Kelce. The Kansas City Chiefs were against the Bears. And what a game to bring your girlfriend to. The Chiefs beat the Bears 41-10. If she wasn’t impressed with Kelce before, she sure must have been after his performance on the gridiron. 

And after that, the two camps were at each other’s throats. Brittany no doubt had less time under the spotlight even though she had brought along her son Bronze for his first game. Most eyeballs were on Swift. Many Swifties watched their first football game that day because of her. 

Which queen would rule the Kansas City Chiefs?

Taylor Swift. It has to be her. The impact she seemingly has had on the franchise on day one of her attending a football game is phenomenal. It was so huge that people in America who had not watched football ever in their lives watched their first game. Swifties outside America who did not know that American football is different from their “soccer” football, now know about the Kansas City Chiefs!

Travis Kelce’s jersey saw a 400% increase in sales. His Instagram follower count saw a 276% increase. The NFL which has been trying hard to get more people to enjoy the sport, may have made months of progress in just one day. Not only this, but the TV viewership for the match was through the roof. 

But…But. There is a strong case for Brittany as well. The intangible support she brings to the Chief is something Taylor Swift can never hope to match. She is a sportsperson herself. She can relate with the Chiefs in a way Swift will never be able to. And she is already bringing actual ground-level impact for women soccer players through Kansas City Current. In the end, it is fair to conclude that Swift has a more tangible impact on the Chiefs, she will never be able to outshine Brittany in some ways.
