The Chiefs are well known for their offense, led by the NFL star Patrick Mahomes. Alas! In the week 6 game against the Denver Broncos, the team faced a major blow to their offense line. This means that the team that heavily relies on their strong offensive line, is now one team player weaker due to wide receiver Justin Watson’s injury.

However, this disheartening news has also been accompanied by some positive updates. It unveiled the status of other key players, including star tight end Travis Kelce and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who was listed as “FP”. Amidst the injury woes, Head Coach Andy Reid outlined the team’s contingency plans in Watson’s absence.

The Kansas City Chiefs faced a significant setback in their Week 6 victory over the Denver Broncos as WR Justin Watson sustained an elbow injury. While head coach Andy Reid confirmed that the injury is not as serious as it may seem, further details on the injury remain uncertain.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter, and Watson was ruled out of the game. Despite not having substantial stats in the game, Watson has been a valuable contributor to the Chiefs’ offense, leading the team’s wide receivers in receiving yards before his injury.

The injury report also revealed that several other key players, including Travis Kelce and L’Jarius Sneed, were listed as “FP” (Full Practice), indicating their readiness to contribute. These updates come as the Chiefs look to maintain their competitive edge heading into Week 7 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Following the injury, Kansas City Chiefs’ Twitter page also confirmed that, “Justin Watson did not practice today.” This information hinted at the potential seriousness of the injury. Reid also mentioned the team’s contingency plan in Watson’s absence, stating, “The Chiefs were set to rely on other wide receivers in Watson’s absence, including Skyy Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, and rookie Rashee Rice.” This requires other players in Chiefs to step up.

The challenge of shuffling the receiving front

Reid acknowledged that Rice had shown promise with a 72-yard performance in the game against Denver, saying, “Rice is the group’s current leader in yards after his 72-yard performance against Denver, and he continues to improve on a weekly basis.” Reid’s comment reflected the team’s confidence in the rookie’s potential.

While Moore and Toney had their moments during the season, they had yet to shine, consistently. Valdes-Scantling, the veteran in the room, had struggled in the first six games of the season. Ane now, the team’s hope was that Watson would benefit from the upcoming mini-bye week and be ready for the Week 7 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, but that seems to be shrouded in uncertainty.
