In a recent turn of events, the NFL made significant changes to its Twitter and Instagram accounts. After the Kansas City Chiefs‘ victory against the New York Jets in a Sunday night game, the NFL’s Instagram account on Monday changed its bio to: “The Chiefs are 2-0 as Swifties.”

Moreover, the NFL’s Twitter header also featured Swift’s image. Following this move, NFL enthusiasts criticized the league’s approach of diverting attention toward Swift. CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson wrote, “The NFL IG page says the ‘Chiefs are 2-0 as Swifties.’ Thoughts?” Followed by the New York Post’s Jets beat writer Brian Costello’s tweet: “This is not a good look by the NFL. This sort of thing fuels the conspiracy theories.”
Barstool Sports’ Big Cat took a harsh way by writing, “What the f— is this @NFL?” Evidently, the league’s approach has not been appreciated by everyone. In a business-oriented move, the NFL is not missing a chance to capitalize on Swift’s stardom.
NFL capitalizing on Swift
Ahead of the speculations around Swift attending the game at MetLife Stadium, the fans were more into Swift than any football player. During a pre-game interview, one of the fans said: “I’m super excited, much more excited to see her than I am to see any of the football players.” Additionally, after the news broke that Swift would attend the Chiefs vs. Jets game, the ticket price surged from $80 to $170+.

The Chiefs players were also caught up in the Swift mania, where they exchanged friendship bracelets before the game. According to a Morning Consult study, more Americans know Taylor Swift than they do the NFL. With all the Taylor Mania going on in the NFL landscape and beyond, the league is cashing in all the related hype. The viewership lodged an all-time record of 27 million viewers on NBC.
