The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 19-8 to extend their winning streak. This game marked Patrick Mahomes‘ 12th consecutive win against the Broncos, maintaining a perfect record against them. He’s now leveled at 1-1 when facing Russell Wilson. Meanwhile, the Red Sea extended their winning streak to five games this season, boasting a strong 5-1 record so far.
In contrast, the Denver Broncos find themselves at the bottom of the NFL rankings. They rank 32nd in points allowed, 32nd in yards allowed, and giving up a devastating seven yards per play. The Thursday night football game was anticipated to be a historic and thrilling matchup. However, the game initially appeared to be rather one-sided, at least until halftime. Despite Mahomes and his team securing victory, he seemed to be concealing some unexpected offensive frustrations. He expressed those in a cryptic 5-word message.

The Chiefs, cheered by “Bad Blood” singer Taylor Swift, won the game 19-8 over the Broncos. In a press conference, post-game, the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes revealed his thoughts on his team’s work and game. Hiding the offense’s heartbreak, Mahomes praised his Chiefs’ defense and special teams. The 28-year-old said, “I mean, I think you ask offensive guys in the locker room right now, they’re going to say that we didn’t play our best. We could have done a lot of things better.”
Mahomes continued, “But like I said, it’s we’re lucky enough that the defense is playing so good. Special teams are playing so good. That we can still win football games. And I still feel like, at times, when it’s most needed, the guys are making the plays.”
His five-word message “Defense is playing so good,” clearly covers the offensive poor play, as he mentioned that “red zone and some third downs”, they didn’t execute well.
On the other hand, Russell Wilson’s team, which isn’t known for having a strong defense, displayed some promising defensive plays. However, their offense, too, struggled during the game.
Powerful defense throughout
The Chiefs’ defense was on point during their Week 6 game. The defense was impressive from the start, as the Broncos were unable to gain much ground, with their longest drive going just 34 yards. Russell Wilson had a rough first half, managing just 37 passing yards and throwing one of his two picks. The defensive line of the Chiefs was able to intercept several passes and get consistent pressure on Wilson, while the secondary kept the ball out of tight coverage.

As for the Broncos, they had a rough start, falling behind 13-0 to the Chiefs. On their initial drive, they limited the Chiefs to just a field goal, picked off Mahomes on the second drive, and effectively thwarted a fake field goal attempt by Kansas City on their third possession. As a result, the Chiefs managed to score only 19 points on Thursday night, marking their second-lowest total for the season. While the Broncos’ defense played well, their offense struggled.
In the end, there seem to be three main reasons for the Broncos’ loss. Wilson’s subpar performance, questionable play calls by Sean Payton, and difficulties in the wide receivers getting open downfield.

The Chiefs took the lead with a score of 13-0 at halftime and managed to maintain it in the final two quarters. Russell Wilson orchestrated a six-play, 61-yard drive in the fourth quarter, resulting in an 11-yard touchdown by Courtland Sutton. Following Javonte Williams‘ touchdown, the Broncos scored on a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 16-8 with 6:07 to play. However, the Chiefs’ offense ran down the clock. And Harrison Butker sealed the game with a 52-yard field goal after the two-minute warning.
