But there’s a bizarre twist to this story. This, no matter how crazy it may sound, is not the first time Americans have been more enthusiastic about musicians than their politicians.

Taylor Swift settles Election vs. NFL battle

The Kansas City Chiefs vs. Chicago Bears game from NFL match week three shattered the latest US election’s viewership record. The 59th US presidential election returns, held in 2020 was watched live by 22.8 million Americans. It was a huge drop from the record-setting night back in 2008 when 71.5 million people tuned in on the broadcast.

In comparison, a staggering 24.3 million people watched the last Sunday’s game live on TV. During the game, Taylor Swift was spotted at the VIP suite in the Chiefs jersey. According to American media outlet Fox Sports, it was also the week’s most-watched live broadcast on any network. Fox’s NFL division recently revealed the stat on Instagram.

Although surprising, it’s not the first time. The ‘déjà vu’ has taken place. Donald Trump, the former US president fell short in popularity against a group of musicians during his presidential campaign. And that was not even a live broadcast.

Back when Trump was the least-liked candidate

A 2016 US pre-election survey found that more Americans liked rock band Nickelback than presidential candidate Donald Trump. Trump, who was contesting the election as a Republican candidate, became the least-liked candidate among all. The Nickelback vote is particularly damning as the band has a reputation for being one of the most disliked bands of all time.
