The Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier likes to make smart and brave deals. He isn’t afraid of cashing out players from the Dolphins, or even trading to the team. Grier is known for his multiple savvy draft picks, including that of the star player Tyreek Hill. But what is next inside his mystery cap this season?
The NFL trade deadline of October 31 is approaching soon. Most recently, the Dolphins traded with the Bears for wide receiver Chase Claypool. And now, he is set to attack the rivals with his position in the new team on Sunday. Apart from him, the Dolphins, on the contrary, are planning to make some more important with reportedly looking for four players, who are already on Grier’s target list.

The Dolphins currently have $3.5 million in cap space. Furthermore, they also have financial flexibility and ways to free up more money for the players whom they want to acquire. So, whom will they be eyeing on? Before the players’ names, it’s important to note why Chris Grier and his team are looking for additions or replacements in their roster. Although comprising some quality outings in the team, the Dolphins lack in their consistency up front. By bringing in additional defensive linemen, and adding depth to the cornerback positions, Dolphins can tackle their trading scene.
TE Zach Ertz can deliver a layer to the offense
They have kept their eyes on Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz, who has been largely wasted in the team. By adding him to Miami, Ertz would be able to utilize his reliable pass-catching and blocking abilities.
He will provide the team with a capable veteran to work alongside Durham Smythe. Thereby adding another dimension to their offense. Furthermore, Miami doesn’t use the TE position much in passing game. Hence, by adding Ertz, they will have the opportunity to work on it as well.
LG Ezra Cleveland could solve the guard problem
According to the rumors, the Minnesota Vikings are planning to trade left guard Ezra Cleveland. And if this turns out to be true, Grier would probably not leave him for any other team. The Dolphins have a left guard problem with Isiah Wynn, who is currently on the injury reserve list. Therefore, by adding Cleveland, the Dolphins could get some stability and depth at the position.
CB Patrick Surtain II could be a major pickup
If Chris Grier selects cornerback Patrick Surtain II, it would be a bold move, as the team will probably let go of Xavien Howard after this season. Surtain, on the other hand, would make Miami better as the coach Vic Fangio would mold him into becoming a permanent and valuable player for the team. Furthermore, he could provide the team with a player in a crucial position whose cost the Dolphins can manage for the next two years.
LB Josey Jewell can provide two benefits
There is no doubt that Miami needs to be better in their linebackers position. Last year, Jerome Baker became a potent threat as a pass rusher and led the Dolphins in tackles. However, this time, he isn’t adding value to the team’s defense. And hence, in place of him, linebacker Josey Jewell can work better, as he would fit well in the team’s defensive scheme.
Furthermore, he can provide another benefit as Jewell has played under coach Vic Fangio when Fangio had a stint with the Denver Broncos. Since coach Fangio is on the Dolphins’ side this time, adding Josey Jewell can also help the team as he knows the 65-year-old coach’s strategies very well.

Apart from them, LB Brian Burns could also be a perfect player to join the Dolphins. Despite being a great athlete, he is stuck in a defense that isn’t suiting him well. Therefore, he might be released by the Carolina Panthers. However, his $16 million contract is the biggest concern among the teams. A lot of money would be absorbed by the Panthers. But, after the season, he would become a free agent. This means the Dolphins would have to sign him to a new deal, and he won’t come cheap.

Besides him, Jordan Hicks from the Minnesota Vikings would be a more realistic option for the Dolphins as he too will be a free agent after the season. Hicks is a good player, but considering his past eight seasons with the Eagles, Cardinals, and Vikings, the 31-year-old linebacker doesn’t have a substantial body of work.
