Josh Allen has cemented his name in the league after being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. The defensive end is always on the journey to better himself, and he gets this competitive flair from home. Though often confused with the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen, the two aren’t related. Allen was born in Virginia and grew up with four older sisters and a twin brother.

The linebacker is not the only one from his family who has entered professional sports. He comes from a family that breathes basketball. His sister, Myisha Hines-Allen, plays basketball for the Washington Mystics in the WNBA. Allen always had a healthy competition with his older sister regarding winning championships and entering pro leagues. Allen’s other sisters are LaTorri, Ranese, and Kyra; his twin is Isiah Allen.

Jaguar’s linebacker was playing for the University of Kentucky as a senior when he would watch his elder sister play basketball for Louisville. Even though the siblings’ support for each other’s careers in sports has been unshakeable, the playful sibling rivalry has its place in their relationship.  Allen admitted to being a bit irked by his sister’s popularity to Courier-Journal, “She was the only senior, so she had the spotlight – little jealous, but it’s just how it is.”

With just one year of age difference, the brother-sister duo is not shy of being smug at being the better one in sports. Whereas Allen boasted that he never lets Myisha beat him in any sport, Hines-Allen insists that while her brother might have outgrown her, she still has the upper hand in basketball.

While the sibling duo have grown up and matured, both still show the spark of their fun dynamic alive. Talking about their childhood years, Allen joked, “She was kind of mean. I’m not going to lie to you,” as per the Washington Post. “I love her to death. I love her to death. I love her to death. She’s not mean no more.”

Allen’s family is a hardcore basketball lover. His granddad, Morris Hines, played high school basketball against long-time Warriors player and coach Al Attles in New Jersey. Allen’s uncle, Greg was known in his playing days as Dunkin’ Hines after the Warriors drafted him. Even though he never played a regular season game, Greg spent 12 seasons in the CBA and overseas. Allen’s four older sisters have inherited the Allens’ ‘tall genes’, three of whom are serious basketball players.

But it’s Myisha Hines-Allen who takes away a major spotlight when it comes to playing ball. Allen and Myisha have indeed cemented a solid place in their respective careers.

Allen converted his playful rivalry into motivation to work harder

While the brother-sister duo still likes to occasionally throw jabs at each other online, they have constantly supported the other’s career as they grew up. Allen tweeted, “Runs in the blood run the state,” after Hines-Allen’s match, where she scored 12 rebounds and 31 points. He also joked about sending a cheeky message to Hines-Allen before her big Sweet 16 match, reading, “Y’all better win. And put me on the ticket list,” as per the Courier-Journal.

Hines-Allen was drafted by the Washington Mystics a year before Allen’s NFL draft as the No. 7 pick. The Jaguars’ draft admitted to being a little petty about the situation. In a talk with the WP, Allen said while he saw his sister enter professional basketball, he took the slight tinge of jealousy as personal motivation. The linebacker thought, “Now I’ve got to go higher,” and started putting in his best efforts in Kentucky to secure a draft position for himself.

“I was definitely hating a little bit,” Allen was reported saying. “Then I thought about it: ‘You know what, let’s take over Kentucky. She’ll take over her part of Kentucky, and I’ll take over my part of Kentucky, and [we’ll] just run the whole state.’ That was really my motive.”

Josh Allen and his sister are consistently working their way up in their respective domains. While Hines-Allen last played with the Galatasaray for the TKBL in 2023, Allen achieved an impressive 43 solo tackles and 33 QB hits last season.

Though often confused with the Buffalo Bills’ Allen, they aren’t related. Allen has his five siblings’ names tattooed on his right arm and keeps them close at heart.
