Super Bowl, one of the world’s most-watched single sporting events, is kicked off by a tiny coin minted in Florida every year. The coin flip, simple yet significant, decides the tone for the rest of the evening for the teams and their near-100-million fans in the stands and away. According to the value, the coin has evolved to embrace the many features and history of the Super Bowl itself.

Now as the Super Bowl LVIII prepares to make its presence soon, here’s a look at the coin that is to take away the spotlight for a brief moment at the Allegiant Stadium.

It is in Highland Mint, Brevard County, Florida that the Super Bowl flip coin has seen its origin and minting for the past 31 years. In the process, the coins take on a gold-lined border with silver filling the center. Further along, “National Football League” in all bold, followed by “Limited Edition,” embosses the gold borders of the coin.

Depending on the season, they take on the details of the game, teams, and the venue to keep it unique to the year. And this time around, while logos of the 49ers and the Chiefs make up one side, “LVIII” and the commissioner’s signature take up the other with the Super Bowl date marked on top.

The coins measure 39mm in diameter and will be plated with .999 fine silver and then selectively plated with 24kt gold. Furthermore, the coins will have ‘0-0-1’ written over them which will determine the team kicking off the Super Bowl. In case of overtime, a coin numbered, ‘0-0-0’ will be used to decide.

“We usually do heads with the Super Bowl logo on it and tails would be the two teams,” mentions Vincent Bohbot, executive vice president at Highland Mint. This year’s batch has been sent to the referee Bill Vinovich to be used in Las Vegas. With that in place, the production now offers enthusiastic followers a chance to get their hands on the coins.
