On Thursday’s episode of the podcast, Steve Spagnuolo talked about their Super Bowl win for the fourth time. Furthermore, he made sure to comment on his relationship with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and what makes the star QB special. The former NFL punter Pat McAfee asked Spagnuolo about Mahomes, considering he is on the road to becoming one of the most successful QBs in the league. He wanted to know how the 28-year-old puts aside his ego and how his [Spagnuolo’s] relationship is with Mahomes.
McAfee recalled an incident when Mahomes, after winning the first playoffs, mentioned that he “had to evolve as a player and realize like we got a defense that’s really good. So I don’t need to maybe risk it as much. We can punt the ball and let our defense kind of do its thing.” Spagnuolo responded, “Patrick’s a team guy, he’s all about winning. He’s all about the team and when you’re on the other side of the ball that makes you feel tremendously good. That was a huge compliment that Pat paid to all of the defensive coaches and players when he made that statement and we believe in him the same way and it’s a two-way street here.”
Spagnuolo further acknowledged Mahomes’ day-to-day operating style, appreciating his coming to meet him every time when he walked towards his meeting room. Additionally, the four-time SB winner thanked God for having Patrick on their side. Besides praising his quarterback & his leadership qualities, the 64-year-old also cheerfully mentioned that Mahomes is a “gifted” talent, who can play at any position.
Steve Spagnuolo had a request to Andy Reid for Patrick Mahomes!
In the same episode, the Chiefs’ DC Steve Spagnuolo expressed his admiration for Patrick Mahomes, stating that owing to the quarterback’s exceptional abilities and determination, he would love to have him on the defensive side of the ball. Spagnuolo joked about making Mahomes a two-way player, trying him out as a safety or corner, while playfully acknowledging the need for approval from head coach Andy Reid.
He said, “I don’t think coach Reid is going to go for it. How about that right, wouldn’t that set a legacy? That guy can do whatever he wants, if he wants to be a ping-pong champion, he can do that, he can be a golf [champion] if he wants to be, he’s that naturally gifted. He’s a great person, I love being around him, all kinds of energy.”
Mahomes has indeed shown his talent and interest in multiple sports – golf tournaments, baseball events, or investing in Formula 1. What was your favorite moment from this year’s Super Bowl? Tell us in the comments below.
