For a fanbase that is used to winning back-to-back Super Bowl Championships and holding the title of one of the two teams with the most number of Super Bowl wins, this season has been devastating. And when the New England Patriots DB Jabrill Peppers stated the obvious, he came under heavy fire from a jilted fanbase. But instead of capitulating to the pressure and apologizing for his statements, he owned it and accepted that his team was far from what it used to be.

After the 10-7 loss to the 4-8 Giants, as the disheartened Pats made a beeline for the locker room, Peppers walked up to RB Saquon Barkley to congratulate him for his victory. Before Barkley could warn him that he was wearing a mic as part of the NFL’s Mic’d Up program, he blurted out those fateful words, “You’re lucky we a**.” and both of them laughed good-naturedly.

The NFL then released the video of the interaction which angered Pats fans. During a media interaction later, Peppers didn’t apologize for the comment he made but for the distraction it had caused. “I just want to apologize to my teammates and coaches for even having to answer questions about that,” Peppers explained. “We have more important things to worry about than me being quoted on a hot mic.”
And he is correct. With the Pats’ abysmal record, some fans even jumped to Peppers’ defense – is what he said, really that far from the truth? The team has more pressing matters to attend to after their recent loss.
How bad are the Pats doing this season?
Peppers also lamented the fact that next year the Pats are sure to have a top 5 draft pick, but it would not come through the trade route. He took the blame off head coach Bill Belichick and his assistants and said that while they had put up great game plans; the players hadn’t executed them well enough.

The defensive back himself, however, has been one of the shining lights this season. He has started all the games of this season for the Pats and played almost 95% of their defensive snaps. With 59 tackles and 6 passes defended, he is the leader in his franchise in that metric. He has also emerged as the de facto leader of his team and emphasized that he wants “to be part of the solution.”
