Despite being labeled as a mere “game manager” by some critics, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has garnered praise from influential figures within the NFL, including Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. In a conversation with Fox Sports’ Peter Schrager, Spagnuolo emphasized his respect for Purdy, highlighting his character and commending his impressive gameplay.

Later in the podcast, he also highlighted the role played by the defense and certain players in sealing the Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs.

After the Chiefs’ victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, Spagnuolo reached out to Purdy via text to express his admiration for the quarterback’s performance. “I just texted Brock [Purdy] the other day,” Spagnuolo told Peter Schrager on Friday. “I tried to track down his number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him. What a terrific game he played. He’s such a quality guy, strong Christian man, and I respect him.”

Reflecting on Purdy’s film, Spagnuolo noted how he was particularly impressed by the quarterback’s ability to execute plays effectively, even against formidable opponents like Green Bay and Detroit. Purdy, famously the final pick of the 2022 draft, silenced doubters in the postseason with his standout performance, demonstrating his knack for extending plays with his legs and maintaining a clean game in the Super Bowl.

In the pivotal moments of Super Bowl LVIII, it wasn’t just the Chiefs’ offense that shone; their defense also played a crucial role in securing the victory. Led by Spags, the Chiefs’ defense had been a standout unit throughout the season, showcasing creativity and resilience. This was particularly evident in the championship game, where they held the Niners to just 22 points over five quarters, allowing only two touchdowns and playing a significant role in the team’s comeback.

A key moment came late in the 4th quarter when, following a two-minute warning, the Chiefs had to quickly adjust their pre-snap call on third-and-five. Spagnuolo actually consulted with LB Nick Bolton on play calling. “So Nick’s on the field. I clicked the button, and I said, ‘Nick, what do you think about this?’ All I wanted to do was see his reaction and he just started [going] yes, yes, yes and did the signal. He was all-in. I knew when he was all-in that we should change it to that, so we change personnel and put a different call in.”

With contributions from players like CB Trent McDuffie, and safeties Deon Bush and Chamarri Conner, the defense executed flawlessly, halting the 49ers’ drive and giving the Chiefs a chance to tie the game. Spagnuolo also praised the DBs for their versatility and perfect execution. Their collective effort ultimately paved the way for the Chiefs’ victory.
