Tua's injury after Annah's heartfelt message—Is this the cruel reality of the NFL?

Everyone was hyped leading up to the Buffalo BillsMiami Dolphins game until they were not. Yes, Tua Tagovailoa had a bad game against Miami and even took a massive hit in the third quarter. That’s not what his wife, Annah Tagovailoa, was expecting at all. Just like every other game, she was hyped about her husband playing at home.

Before the game, she took to Instagram and posted Tagovailoa’s highlights from the game against the Jaguars. She captioned the IG Story, “Thursday Night! You got this #1 [heart emoji].” It all started fine, the Dolphins and the Bills were at an equilibrium by the end of the first quarter, but things became worse as time progressed.

We’ll not talk about Tagovailoa’s picks today because what he went through was horrid enough. This was his third concussion in the last 3 years, and he might want to take things easy if he’s after longevity. When Tua got up after hitting Damar Hamlin in the third quarter, he was taken to be examined on the sidelines and later headed for the locker room.

Fortunately, Annah and the children were there to meet him in the locker. While we haven’t heard anything from Annah since the concussion, coach Mike McDaniel expressed his worries in the post-game presser. “I’m just worried about the human being,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said. “I was just worried about my guy. It’s not something you ever want to be a part of. You hope not to.”

The common narrative about the whole situation and given Tua’s past, is that he should retire from the league. Shannon Sharpe and Dez Bryant think so. Per Chris Nowinski, a CTE activist and the founder of ConcussionLF, Tagovailoa lost consciousness after contact. It was apparent to him when the QB clenched his right fist.

But while doctors gave their medical two cents on the whole situation, the NFL community is shaken, especially some Bills players, including Josh Allen.

The whole incident has Josh Allen worried about the QB and his family. “He is a great football player, but he is an even greater human being,” Allen said after the game. “He’s one of the best human beings on the planet. I’ve got a lot of love for him, praying for him and his family, hoping everything’s OK.”

Allen’s teammate, Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest on the field last year, knows a lot about life-threatening situations. He took to X and offered his thoughts and prayers. It’s salient to note that Hamlin was the player that Tua Tagovailoa bumped into before suffering a horrid injury.

“My love and prayers with @Tua fasho.. Sending you strength and healing for a speedy recovery. 🙏🏾 much love broski,” Hamlin wrote on X. The timeline of his return is not set in stone, of course. But without Tua, Miami’s chances of going bust this season remain high.

When Tagovailoa got hurt back in 2022, his parents implored him to give up football and retire, but he declined. He loves football too much to give it up. The doctors gave him some hard pills to swallow, though, but he persevered. One thing is for sure, the Dolphins quarterback needs to give sliding some thought.
