Although they say looking back is never a good option, for the Jets, it might be the only option. Since firing their general manager, Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh, the Jets haven’t improved at all. Instead, they are looking like a team that is already planning for next season.
As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, their owner, Woody Johnson, is looking to hire The 33rd Team, founded by their former GM Mike Tannenbaum. Mike and former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman will be spearheading the search for a new Jets GM and head coach before next season. They would help the organization by vetting and interviewing candidates that ideally suit their bill.
And, of course, Woody Johnson would also be involved in this search alongside other Jets executives. Apart from on-ground analysis, The 33rd Team will provide data analysis and trends over the past 5 years to make the best decision. As for Tannenbaum, the Jets Nation could be well aware of his time at the club. His reign as general manager from 2006-2012 saw the Jets make it to the playoffs last time.

Before that, Mike joined the Jets in 1997 to handle players’ contracts under then-head coach Bill Parcells. He went on to sign players like Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis and successful franchise Pro Bowlers like Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson. After leaving the Jets, he served the Dolphins as their Executive Vice President of Football Operations. Then, in 2019, he laid the foundation for the 33rd Team, which is now going to help the Jets look to the future.
His partner in this mammoth operation, Spielman, had just helped the Commanders find a new GM and head coach last season. And look at them now: With Adam Peters as GM and Dan Quinn as head coach, the Commanders are on their way to the playoffs. As for the Jets, they are 1-5 since Johnson decided to pay off Saleh $10M to get rid of him. Well, he was thinking of doing the same with their four-time NFL MVP, Aaron Rodgers.

Woody Johnson floated the idea of betraying Aaron Rodgers
What’s your perspective on:
Is bringing back Mike Tannenbaum the Jets' best move, or just another step backward?
Have an interesting take?
Although the Jets season wasn’t this bad at the beginning, Johnson was already contemplating benching Aaron Rodgers. After the Jets failed to win at home against the Broncos 10-9, Johnson suggested a wild idea to his coaching staff. As per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Johnson believed Rodgers was holding the team back. So he wanted Tyrod Taylor to take his place on the offense. Well, that idea was swiftly rejected by Saleh and Douglas, who were then part of the backroom staff.
The following week, Rodgers ended up throwing 3 interceptions as the Jets lost to the Vikings 23-17 in London. This led to Johnson breaking his 25-year record and sacking Saleh after just 5 games into the season. However, there’s a twist in the tale amid all the talks of Rodgers not reprising his role next season. As per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, A-Rod’s and Johnson’s fractured relationship rumors are overblown. Instead, they just dined together in New York this month.
