Can the Steelers overcome their injury woes and still dominate the Raiders this Sunday?

With the NFL season rolling on, it’s like musical chairs out there. Especially with the teams scrambling to make changes in the roster. And the Pittsburgh Steelers? They are trying to ensure they don’t end up without a seat. With key players on the injured reserve list, they’ve gotta shake things up before their clash with the Las Vegas Raiders.

So, first off, the Steelers have placed DE DeMarvin Leal on injured reserve, according to Aaron Becker. Ouch! That’s a deep hit for their defense. But don’t think they are just sitting around sulking. Oh no no no! With linebacker Ade Ogundeji on the active roster things look sorted. The dude has still got what it takes despite missing last season.

First things first! Ogundeji was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. And in his rookie season? Well, he appeared in 11 outta 16 games. And finished with 33 tackles, a sack, a pass defense, and a fumble recovery. Now he’s ready to roll.

You might think, that’s it! Ha, you’re wrong. The team has also elevated running back Jonathan Ward and linebacker Eku Leota from the practice squad. Now that adds some extra spice to the pot. Elevated for the Week 5 game against the Dallas Cowboys, Ward took part in the Steelers rookie minicamp on a tryout basis and was signed following it. In four seasons in the NFL? Well, he played in 44 games. And completed with 19 carries for 78 yards. Don’t forget his six receptions for 52 yards, an 8.7-yard average, and one touchdown.

Plus, he brings some experience! And that’s always a plus when you’re dealing with injuries. Then there’s Leota. After he began the 2023 season on the Panthers practice squad, soon after he was signed to the active roster. Leota even appeared in eight games last season on special teams. He has three defensive tackles, one quarterback hit, and started in the Panthers Week 2 game against the Los Angeles Chargers this season, recording a sack. Gotta love underdogs making it happen!

Steelers clan: Resilience amidst adversity

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Steelers overcome their injury woes and still dominate the Raiders this Sunday?

Have an interesting take?

Now, the Steelers’ injury list is a bit alarming. Thirteen players are out, which feels like a lot, but these new signings might help counterbalance that. It’s all about depth, baby! With Ogundeji ramping up the defense and Ward bringing that speed to the offense, they’ve crafted a bit of a safety net here.

Ogundeji’s focus is on doing whatever is needed. “If they ask me to rush the passer, I’m going to rush the passer. If they ask me to stop the run, I’m going to stop the run.” Gotta appreciate that type of attitude. And to be honest? Sounds like he’s ready to hit the ground running this Sunday against the Raiders.

On another note? This whole situation is a real example of how quickly things can change in the NFL. One minute, you’re gearing up with a full roster. And the next? You’re plotting your next move with a bunch of guys from the practice squad. But for the Steelers, it’s not just about making it through. It’s also about finding that spark to keep their season alive. And with Ogundeji eager to re-establish himself and the other new guys ready to step up, the Steelers might just be onto something. This could either be a total flop or an interesting twist in their season saga.

The Steelers are diving into their Sunday game against the Raiders with a mix of fresh faces. And not to forget, a “we’ve got this” attitude. Will Ogundeji, Leota, and Ward be the secret sauce for a win? Who knows! But expect that the Steelers are all-in on giving it their best shot.
