Can the Steelers outsmart Sean Payton's experience, or are they walking into a trap this week?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving on shallow waters while making their trip from Atlanta to Denver. Although they managed to start the season on the front foot, the Broncos pose a different challenge altogether. With Sean Payton having Bo Nix under his command, the Steelers are in for a clash to remember.

Even though confidence is on the side of the visiting team, DT Cameron Heyward has warned the Steelers about the Broncos duo. Speaking to the reporters, Heyward stated, “We try to have good pressure, get after the run so you can make them one dimensional, but with an experienced coach like Sean Payton, it’s not gonna be that easy.” With more than 17 years under his belt as head coach of an NFL franchise, counting his tenure in New Orleans, Payton comes with a reputation.

After a close-fought defeat against the Seahawks, where Nix seemingly outclassed everyone on his team. Payton spoke highly about the rookie QB Bo Nix, “Certainly, with the experience each week, you’re going to have growth from a young player.” While on the topic of Nix, Payton pointed out the importance of ‘movement skills,’ which make Nix a special talent. Having completed his debut on 26-of-42 passes for 138 passing yards and a rushing TD to his name.

Nix talked about how week 1 was just a learning curve for him, “It was a great game of learning, a great growing game.” But the Denver rookie QB also mentioned the challenge Steelers would be bringing on Mile High end. “Well, it’s definitely a challenge. They have great players. They’ve been a great defense for a long time. I have a lot of respect for them. It’s going to be fun playing them for the first time and seeing what it’s like,” Nix added.

As Nix talked about the defense of the Steelers, nothing can be taken away from the visiting team. With four-time All-Pro T.J. Watt anchoring their defense, the Steelers have Hayward, Patrick Queen and Minkah Fitzpatrick taking care of the back line. However, the one that could potentially catch everyone’s attention is the continued absence of Russell Wilson.

Before the week 1 clash against the Falcons, Russell Wilson was kept out of action, citing a calf injury. Although it was projected that the Steelers QB would return before the trip to the Broncos. Right now, the situation isn’t in favor of the veteran QB, who is set to sit on the sidelines while watching his team take on the Broncos.

Wilson had a point to prove after leaving Denver and gifting his old employers with the largest dead money salary cap, standing at $53 million. He even tarnished some of his legacy after recording more than 100 sacks in his two seasons at Denver. But when speaking about Wilson’s availability, Tomlin said, “We’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback. I think that’s an appropriate way to do it. Speculation is a waste of time. Russell’s hurt. He’s not available to us.”

As Wilson continues his recovery, Justin Fields may take up the reins yet again in Denver. Looking back, his performances speak for themselves as Fields guided the Steelers to their narrow 18-10 win over the Falcons. Moreover, Wilson could even find it tougher to break into the starting lineup that is slated to perform exceptionally next week.
