This season will go down in the history books as the “Season of the Rookies”. When it seemed like things could not get worse for the 2-7 New York Giants this season, they will now be forced to activate Plan C and hit the panic button. A rookie QB, Tommy DeVito, will start on Sunday against the 5-3, formidable Dallas Cowboys. The Giants are currently ranked fourth in the NFC East division, while the Cowboys are second and are divisional rivals.
In the last Sunday Night Football, the Giants lost their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, to a torn ACL. Backup QB Tyrod Taylor is currently serving his time on the injured reserve list. So, the Giants had no option but to activate their backup QB’s backup. DeVito walked into the field and the Giants lost 30-6 to the Las Vegas Raiders. But amidst this gloom comes the promise of a season record.

As soon as DeVito snaps the ball during the Giants’ offensive drive, he will set a season record. This season has been unique in that there 9 rookie QBs have already played a game as part of the starting lineup. Now, he will become the 10th rookie quarterback to be a part of the starting lineup this season. In the limited action that he has seen this season, he has completed 17 of his 27 passes for 174 yards. He already has a TD to his name and 2 interceptions. The Giants are also expected to add QB Matt Barkley as DeVito’s backup. If something happens to DeVito, and Barkley has to be activated, it will be the Giants fourth QB to play in one season!
So, who is Tommy DeVito, and why does he hold so much promise to the Giants? He is a native of New Jersey who played for the Illinois and Syracuse college teams but went undrafted in 2023. In the two games that he has played, he has managed to rake up impressive numbers. However, he is up against tough competition in his first game as starting QB. The Cowboys had sacked the Giants’ starting QB, Daniel Jones, 7 times when they clashed first on September 11. The Giants had lost that game 40-0.

CJ Stroud and Bryce Young could emerge as promising rookie QBs
CJ Stroud currently leads the 4-4 Houston Texans. As is evident by their record going into week 10, they have had a middling season so far. In spite of their 0.500 record, they are currently 2nd in the AFC South division. With just 46 seconds left on the clock for the game to end, he led his team to an exciting 75-yard TD. The Texans also ended up winning the game, and Stroud broke the all-time NFL rookie record for passing yards in a game with 470 yards. As reported by CBS Sports, he also became the third QB in the league’s history to throw for at least 470 yards and 5 TDs while managing 0 interceptions.
Bryce Young, on the other hand, still has to prove himself since joining the NFL. The Carolina Panthers have an abysmal score of 1-7 so far this season. But Young, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2021, is one of the greats of college football. He wrapped up his high school career with 13,250 passing yards and 152 passing TDs. But will he manage to turn around the Panthers’ fortunes? Or should they just write off this season and bank on getting early picks in next year’s draft and begin afresh?
