With Fear of Losing Out to Kenny Pickett, Russell Wilson Warned Against ‘Dangerous’ Steelers Stint by 2X Super Bowl Champ

Wilson is yet to find a new home! A lot of options are being floated as to where he could land next. But among them, the Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be the best guess. In fact, just yesterday, reporter Gerry Dulac said that the Steelers “are tentatively planning to meet” Russell Wilson. And that’s he hasn’t done that yet with any other team.

While the media is abuzz with speculations, some think that this is highly unlikely. And the major roadblock to Wilson’s signing with Pittsburgh seems to be their incumbent QB, Kenny Pickett.

Why Russell Wilson would not land in Pittsburgh

It’s a topic that’s got everyone talking, and Damien Woody, a former NFL O-lineman and 2x Super Bowl champ, is tipping the scales toward disapproval. Woody’s take? He’s not sold on the idea for Wilson. In his eyes, the Steelers have their bets placed on Kenny Pickett, and Wilson stepping into Pittsburgh could mean he’s risking more than just a game.

“This would be a dangerous situation for Russell Wilson, going to Pittsburgh. Because this Pittsburgh Steelers team, they’re not giving up on Kenny Pickett,” Woody said on Get Up! this morning. “They’re not gonna throw away a guy they just drafted in the first round a couple years ago.”

He did say that there was only a small chance that he would end up with the Steelers, but that “it might not be fair.”

Steelers need to find a more permanent QB

Just because Russell Wilson could technically sign for the bare minimum, it doesn’t mean he’s going to settle for that. If he’s heading to Pittsburgh, Woody stated that Wilson will fight for a better deal. It’s about more than money—it’s about respect and not being sidelined. His last two games with the Broncos were spent on the bench. He would not want to repeat that.

However, having to compete with a younger QB could be just the challenge Wilson needs to hit his stride again. Even if he clinches the spot, it’s more of a quick fix for the Steelers. Wilson is 36, and he isn’t getting any younger. They will need to find a more permanent solution to their QB woes, eventually.

But as Woody pointed out, the Steelers cutting ties with Pickett so soon, especially after all the time spent under Matt Canada’s wing, just doesn’t add up. The next few days will be interesting, with Wilson and the Steelers set to meet at the table. Let’s see if they can strike a deal.
