Is Patrick Mahomes the greatest QB of our generation, or does he owe it all to Andy Reid?

In the kingdom of sports, Patrick Mahomes reigns supreme. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, known for his magic arm and uncanny ability to pull rabbits out of hats on the field, has done it again. But this time, he’s not dodging 300-pound linemen or threading the needle between defenders. No, Mahomes has just pulled off a feat rarer than a Chiefs’ loss – he’s nabbed his fifth ESPYS award.

The news broke like a perfectly thrown spiral, with Mahomes taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share his excitement. “Incredible athletes across the board in this category,” he wrote, showing the humility of a true champion. “Blessed and honored to bring home this award again. thanks to the fans and @ESPYS 🙏Big dawg Andy crushed too.” It’s clear that even after reaching the mountaintop, Mahomes hasn’t forgotten the view from the ground.

This latest trophy, the Best Athlete (Men’s Sports) award, is Mahomes’ second consecutive win in the category after claiming it last year. He also won the Best NFL player award last July following an incredible 2022-23 campaign, and his breakout 2018-19 season was enough for his first.  It’s a back-to-back victory that puts him in the same rarified air as LeBron James, Lance Armstrong, and Tiger Woods – the only other athletes to claim multiple wins in this category. But Mahomes isn’t just collecting hardware; he’s building a legacy.

Just a day earlier, Mahomes had secured the third NFL Player ESPYS, making it a clean sweep of his nominations. It’s worth noting that this isn’t just another day at the office for Mahomes. He’s the first player since Kurt Warner in 1999 to be named both league MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same year. Talk about a chiefs’ chef’s kiss of a season!

The competition was fierce, with Mahomes outshining a stellar lineup. There was Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way phenom who led the American League in home runs despite missing the final month of the season. Scottie Scheffler, the golf prodigy who joined Tiger Woods as the only player with multiple Masters victories while ranked World No. 1. And let’s not forget Connor McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers star who broke Wayne Gretzky’s playoff assist record. Yet, Mahomes stood tall among these giants.

In a touching display of team spirit, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid accepted the award on Mahomes’ behalf. “We’re very lucky to have him in Kansas City…all of us in the NFL, but really in Kansas City,” Reid said, his words carrying the weight of multiple Super Bowl rings. “We appreciate everything he does for the city itself and the organization.”

The Chiefs’ success isn’t limited to individual accolades. The team is nominated for the Best Team ESPY this year, looking to defend their title from last year. It’s a testament to the culture of excellence that Mahomes and his teammates have cultivated in Kansas City.

Patrick Mahomes’ influence is more than just a Quarterback

The ripple effect of Mahomes’ success extends far beyond Arrowhead Stadium. His mother, Randi, took to Instagram yesterday to express her pride, writing, “Always and forever so proud of you.” It’s a reminder that behind every great athlete is a supportive family cheering them on.

Mahomes’ influence isn’t limited to the football field. Earlier this year, he was named to TIME Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people. In discussing this honor, Mahomes emphasized the importance of consistency: “You have to build a consistency of a career. In order to be in that conversation, you have to do that on a year-to-year basis. You can’t take it for granted that you did it the year before.”

And for Chiefs fans and sports enthusiasts alike, that’s a cause for celebration. After all, in the game of life, Mahomes isn’t just playing – he’s changing how the game is played.
