The Bills (10-6) are just one win away from their fifth consecutive playoff appearance. With a win over the Dolphins (11-5) on Sunday, the AFC East side could clinch this feat as a #2 seed, and potentially challenge for their maiden Super Bowl glory. However, there’s still a world out there where the Bills could miss the playoffs.
If the Dolphins get the better of the away side, and a few other AFC match-ups give specific outcomes, then it would be unfortunate news for Josh Allen‘s side. But, even if they reached the Super Bowl after 20 years, the uncertainty would only intensify for the Bills. That’s because of this unfortunate tale.

The Bills have four possible ways that can lead to their fifth-straight playoff appearance. Firstly, a win over the Dolphins would win them the AFC East and send them to the playoffs as the #2 seed regardless of other outcomes. Secondly, if they lose, both the Jaguars (9-7) and the Steelers (9-7) would need to lose as well, which would send the Bills to the playoffs as the #6 seed.
Thirdly, if they lose, and the Steelers lose as well, but the Jaguars win, that would send the Bills to the playoffs as the #7 seed. And finally, if they lose along with the Jaguars, but the Steelers win, that would still send them to the playoffs as the #7 seed. However, there’s one possibility as well where Josh Allen could be missing his first-ever playoffs as a starter.
That happens if the Bills lose against the Dolphins, but both the Jaguars and the Steelers can take down their opponents, which would push the former down to the #8 in the AFC. Now, there’s a twist. The postseason is just a route to the Super Bowl. But looking back at history, the route has been more successful for the Bills than the destination itself. To be specific, they are the NFL franchise with the worst Super Bowl luck ever, with an unbelievable record.
Will Josh Allen finally change the Super Bowl fortune of the Bills?

There are a couple of NFL teams that have never won the ring, despite reaching the Super Bowl a couple of times. But all fade in comparison to what the Bills achieved during the 1990s, or rather, failed. They remain the only side to play in four consecutive Super Bowls, which is an NFL record to this day. However, the unfortunate Bills, led by legendary Marv Levy, quite unbelievably lost every single one of them.
More interestingly, each of those losses from 1990 to 1993 was against the current NFC East teams except for the Eagles. 1993 was the end of their Super Bowl run, and neither the franchise nor its great quarterback, Jim Kelly, reached the championship game again. However, time has changed, and Kelly has been replaced by Josh Allen, who’s known for his clutchness during games like that.
It’s unlikely that Allen would easily let go of another hard-earned Super Bowl appearance if the Bills were to reach any. But would they reach, after all? That remains a bigger question for now. And the Bills can take care of what’s in front of them at the moment, starting with a victory over the mighty Dolphins on Sunday, January 8.
