Jets' linebacker woes: Is this the beginning of the end for their playoff hopes?

New York Jets linebacker Haason Reddick isn’t backing from his contract holdout. He didn’t show up at the training camp. The Jets start their season on September 9 against the 49ers. But the LB is still AWOL from the locker room and clouds of doubt shroud the opening game.

HC Robert Saleh recently addressed the reporters. When asked about the linebacker, he said that he isn’t aware of his status to play in the season opener. However, the coach expects the LB to return on time, saying, “It’s feasible, I mean. The opponent we’re playing now just had two guys show up to practice. So you trust that your veterans who know how to do things the right way will get themselves ready to play.” One thing is clear: Reddick might not play the Monday game. For those of you who don’t know, let’s trace it back to the origin.

On April 1, 2024, the Eagles traded the linebacker to the Jets. His base salary for this season is $14.25 million. But he wanted a hike on that. When that didn’t happen, Haason Reddick refused to participate in team activities. ESPN’s Dan Graziano mentioned that the Jets’ coaching staff has not talked to him since he joined the team.

The management threatened him with fines if he didn’t attend the training camp. But he didn’t give up his stance. Now, he has more than $2 million in fines. If the LB doesn’t return within 72 hours, The Jets will have to rethink their strategies. The crucial time before the beginning of the season has been damp for them till now.

Have an interesting take?

Jets have included 6 linebackers in their roster. And none of them is a rookie. Good sign! For the last 3 years, Quincy Williams has been a rock in defense. Last season, he played 17 games and had 139 tackles. CJ Mosley has been permanent in their defense for the last 5 years. In 2023 alone, he had 172 tackles in 17 games. They receive ample support from others as well.

Jermaine Johnson joined the team in 2022. In his rookie season, he showed his talent with 2.5 sacks and 29 tackles in 14 games. They added Haason Reddick to strengthen their defense. But with the continued holdout, they have to pick from Chazz Surratt, Jamien Sherwood, and Zaire Barnes. A huge responsibility is on them now.

HC has to organize things now. He can’t wait for a miracle. If Reddick returns, it would be great. But his not being there can’t be an excuse for anything.
