It was an unfortunate evening for the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans. With two back-to-back losses arguably due to controversial calls, anyone would be frustrated with the bad luck. This time, again at Arrowhead, the Chiefs lost to the Buffalo Bills, and the Chiefdom pointed fingers at the last call that took away the victory from the Chiefs’ hands.

The Chiefs had their second consecutive loss this season after 2021. Although Patrick Mahomes and his team tried hard, the Bills had their day to keep their playoff chances alive. However, this 17-20 loss and the controversial call in the end quarter didn’t sit well with Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, who used her social media power to slam the responsible referee with one word.

During the Chiefs game against the Bills in Week 14, the Red Army was attempting a comeback. The combined effort of an impressive long throw from Patrick Mahomes, an incredible lateral pass from Travis Kelce, and the untouched run from Kadarius Toney all went in vain because of a controversial call on the wide receiver.

Mahomes, the entire Chiefs’ community, and even Patrick’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, didn’t appreciate this. Using her social media influence, Brittany shared a zoomed-in video from the game, highlighting the referee responsible for making that call. She wrote a cryptic caption on the video of her Instagram story, saying, “MVP,” probably referring to her husband and supporting him, who was prevented from securing a victory possibility.

The Chiefs were behind 20-17 with less than two minutes left, and Travis Kelce made a fantastic play, arguably one of the best of his career. Patrick Mahomes threw a long pass to the tight end about 20 yards down the field. Instead of going down when the three Bill defenders approached, he made a brilliant move and threw the ball backward to Kadarius Toney. The wide receiver then ran into the end zone, seemingly scoring a touchdown that would have put the Chiefs ahead. However, the referees placed a penalty on Toney for his offside position at the start. Because of the penalty, the Chiefs moved too far away from the goalpost to tie the game with a field goal.

Unfortunately, this penalty didn’t lead them to make a successful play on the fourth down, ending their attempt to make a comeback. Being carried away by the emotions, Patrick Mahomes, too, was seen frustrated at the sidelines.

After Kadarius Toney was flagged at the line of scrimmage, the Chiefs’ unexpected loss shook Patrick Mahomes. He was visibly emotional on the sidelines, slammed his helmet on the field in anger, and was seen yelling at the referees. After the game, he shared that his frustration wasn’t just about how the controversial call affected the game, but also how it might affect Travis Kelce’s chances of making it to the Hall of Fame.

He stated, “There was no warning throughout the entire game. And then you wait; there’s a minute left in the game to make a call like that. It’s tough, man. I’m at a loss for words because regardless of whether we win or lose, just at the end of the day, another game, and we’re talking about the refs. Not what we really want in the NFL for football.” Although Patrick Mahomes was right to be upset, the rules of the NFL don’t say that penalties should only be called if they directly impact the play. Here, Toney was unfortunately offside, prompting the refs to call a penalty.
