Is Patrick Mahomes redefining the QB role with his flashy plays, or just showing off?

The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Detroit Lions in their second preseason game, but that doesn’t seem to be the takeaway from the thrilling game. People went crazy when Patrick Mahomes threw a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce. However, it wasn’t a calculated effort, and the Kansas City Chiefs star was unhappy to improvise the toss.

Brittany Mahomes on the other hand was happy to see her husband on the field again. While Mahomes implied that the pass was out of “spite,” things weren’t bothersome for his wife Brittany, who took to social media and shared the highlight.

Resharing the Chiefs post captioned “FIRST BEHIND-THE-BACK IN GAME on her IG Stories, Brittany displayed her emotions by hyping the QB with an honest, “Let’s goooooo (fire emoji).” Her upload reflected her liking of Mahomes’ competitive spirit. As it turned out, though, the QB threw that pass in desperation and spite.

Mahomes’ pass to Travis Kelce allowed the Chiefs to gain 8 yards and it was his last drive of the game when the Chiefs subbed in Carson Wentz for their QB1. Obviously, the QB didn’t get a chance to watch the pass on tape, but he’s done it plenty of times in practice. One of his favorite targets is Isaiah Pacheco for the same.

“It has to happen naturally,” the QB said about his pass to Kelce. “I can’t force it. …It probably looked pretty cool, but I haven’t actually got to see it yet.” Did Mahomes risk it? Was it a designed play? More so, what does Andy Reid think about it? For starters, Mahomes did risk the pass and as evident from his comment, it wasn’t a designed play. As for the head coach, he’s never seen the pass executed in the game.

“Gotta think positive,” said Andy Reid. “They do it in basketball every game several times in every game. So, it’s not that big of a deal [going] behind the back.” Despite all the fancy passing and Mahomes spending a brief time in the game, the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Lions 23-24. Yet, in the overall scenario, losing a preseason game wasn’t a point of concern for the 3x Super Bowl winner. However, being forced to throw a risky pass was.

Patrick Mahomes not happy to use his last resort

The 28-year-old Super Bowl champion thinks that the pass “can’t be planned.” In fact, he wanted the Chiefs’ tight end to run a flag route, but he didn’t. What later became a highlight of the whole game was something Patrick Mahomes never planned to do. He clarified his thought process later in an in-game interview.

“Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run, and then it was a kind of a behind-the-back pass, kinda ’cause I was mad,” he joked, later adding, “Out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass.” But it doesn’t take anything away from Kelce’s prowess on the field, who has been working harder than ever to get another shot at the Super Bowl.

“It’s remarkable, honestly,” Mahomes said of Kelce’s training camp performance. “I mean, you see him out there every day at practice. He’s working. He’s in there getting the reps. He actually gets mad when they take him out.” This year, unlike the last ones, would be even more painstaking for the reigning Super Bowl champions. The schedule is as tough as it gets as the Chiefs will be playing 9 games on the road so this season will be an uphill battle for them.
