Is Roger Goodell's suspension of Jimmy Garoppolo justified, or is it another NFL overreach?

Since becoming NFL Commissioner in 2006, Roger Goodell has maintained a strict stance on discipline. Over the years, he has suspended players, coaches, and other staff for various offenses. His rigid approach to off-the-field incidents has frustrated the NFLPA, leading them to propose a new hearing committee in 2016. However, that plan never materialized, and the NFL Commissioner continues to take action against rule breakers. This time, QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been at the receiving end.

In March 2024, the NFL suspended the quarterback for violating its NFL PED policy. The signal caller had used a prescribed medication that did not have a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). The suspension ruled him out of the first 2 games of the 2024 season. He arrived at the Los Angeles Rams this year. So, that’s not good news for fans.

The QB was also disappointed with the suspension and said, “I mean, just messed up the TUE, really. I hate to joke about it, but just messed up the TUE when I first got to Las Vegas, and yeah, bad timing, I guess.” He’s right! He has struggled in his career for the last 3-4 years. His one-year contract with the Rams has a base value of $4.5 million, with a maximum value of $12 million after adding incentives. However, that’s not the only player on the team who will miss game time.

The NFL has also suspended Rams’ offensive tackle Alaric Jackson for the first two games of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Jackson did not participate in the training camp due to an ankle injury, and the team is monitoring his rehab weekly. While he signed a one-year contract with the team, his future with the Rams remains uncertain.

LA Rams roster going in 2024 season

The biggest news from the Rams’ roster cuts is the release of linebacker Ernest Jones IV. He emerged as one of their top linebackers last season, with head coach Sean McVay even referring to him as a captain. This off-season, Jones appeared to be in great form, with teammates rallying around him during the practice camp. However, the franchise faced the harsh realities of the league; unable to fit him into their roster, they allowed him to seek a trade. Now, their quarterbacks have to take the reins.

Their starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is struggling with a hamstring injury. While McVay is not concerned about his comeback, the fans are. The team doesn’t have many options at quarterback, with Stetson Bennett as the only other signal-caller. Now in his second NFL year, Bennett looked in good form during the preseason games. However, Jimmy Garoppolo’s suspension adds further uncertainty to their situation.

The Rams start their season on the 8th of September against the Detroit Lions. We can expect Garoppolo in the 3rd game against the San Francisco 49ers. Will the team miss him? We’ll find it soon.
