Things couldn’t have ended on a more disappointing note for Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. But there’s one player who might lose his good night’s sleep after the 27-20 loss to Patrick Mahomes and the men in red, Isaiah Likely. Both teams played great football, but it all boiled down to the last 10 seconds of the game.
Initially, Lamar Jackson’s plan was to throw a quick pass to Zay Flowers. However, Flowers seemed to be on a different route and completely missed the catch. The Ravens still had a chance to tie the game or possibly win it with a two-point conversion. However, their hopes took a backseat after Isaiah Likely failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

Well, after the incomplete touchdown pass to Zay Flowers, Lamar Jackson decided to take more drastic measures. It was the last quarter, and the Ravens had an opportunity to tie the game on the 3 and goal with 5 seconds remaining in the game. Jackson caught the snap, took a few steps back and tried to elude the defenders in whatever little time he had.

It’s astonishing how the 2x MVP threw a laser to Isaiah Likely with just one second remaining on the clock. The ball was in the air and so was everyone’s expectations. A Chiefs defender tried to knock the ball off but couldn’t get there in time. Likely jumped and caught the ball and it looked like a buzzer beater moment.

However, NBC’s cameras were a little too detailed and they revealed the real picture of what went down. Likely’s touchdown was overruled as his toe landed on the sideline after he made the catch. The clock ran out and the game concluded 27-20 in the Chiefs’ favor. The Ravens TE had 9 receptions over 111 yards, and he even scored a touchdown after catching a 49-yard pass from Jackson.
According to league rules, “A touchdown is scored if the ball is inbounds and has broken the plane of the goal line (Rule 2-12-2) before or simultaneous with the ball carrier going out of bounds.”
But despite all of this, the TE was optimistic that the Ravens would have the upper hand over the Chiefs in the post season games.

The Ravens TE takes the podium with confidence
Likely did all he could to reel the ball in, but his catch was simply marred by bad luck. He later did a presser where he revealed that, “I say this is probably the worst game we’re going to play all year. So, if this is the best that they got, good luck in the post-season.” Looking at how both teams played today, it’s highly believable that the Chiefs and Ravens will soon meet each other in the post season.

While the Ravens TE pointed out the inevitable, the Chiefs’ leader, Patrick Mahomes, had a few jabs to take on Likely’s touchdown. He “advised” the Ravens TE to wear white cleats, so that there’s a possibility of evading the system next time. It would have been difficult to rule out the touchdown if Likely had white cleats on.
Mahomes told the media, “Just got to wear white cleats next time. That’s my advice to him [Isaiah Likely] …” But despite the TE being clearly out of bounds, Lamar Jackson sided with his teammate and revealed, “I thought it was a touchdown. Still think it’s a touchdown.” What do you think about the NFL season opener? Let us know in the comments.
