Cade York released—Did the Browns make the right call, or was it too harsh?

The Commanders had a pretty rough outing in Florida as they lost 37-20 to the Bucs. Not a way to start a new season, with so much fresh hope instilled. Right from the new HC to the new QB. But it was not their day. Now, a day later, they have decided to release their kicker Cade York.

The Commanders’ official X handle confirmed the reports with a one-liner: “We have released K Cade York.” Does it solve the problem? A part of it yes. And we are not trying to sit here to convince you otherwise. But York’s showing was more than underwhelming.

Cade York’s day went from rough to brutal after missing two field goals. And the consequence of it became evident, although a tad bit quicker than anyone could have expected. Not even 24 hours on the clock and the team announced his release. Sure, he nailed both extra points, but when the field goals don’t land, the stakes get high quickly, right?

York, a fourth-round pick by the Browns in 2022, shined in college at LSU but struggled to replicate that success in the NFL. His first season in Cleveland saw him hit only 24 of 32 field goals. The Commanders snagged him in August, trading a conditional 2025 seventh-round pick, but with York not sticking around for two games, they won’t have to give up that pick. Talk about a quick exit.

NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo confirmed the release voids of the trade with Cleveland, saving the Commanders a future draft pick. So, what’s next? The hunt for a new kicker didn’t take long to kick off and Washington is already being linked to a more secure option.

The Commanders get linked to Austin Seibert after releasing Cade York

Have an interesting take?

Cade York’s journey has been a wild one. After being waved by the Browns, he bounced around the Giants and Titans practice squads before re-signing with Cleveland in 2024. Now, after a brief stint in Washington, he’s back in free agency. Talk about a rollercoaster! But don’t worry, Commanders fans, there’s hope on the horizon.

Tom Pelissero was first to break the news: the Commanders might just be eyeing Austin Seibert as their next kicker. Seibert, also a Browns draft pick from 2019, has a solid resume with a 45-of-53 success rate on field goals and 56-of-62 on extra points. Just what you need from your Special Team player.

A thing or two to note is that Seibert’s stint with the Jets last season was rather low-key with just one field goal attempt. But he’s geared up for a bigger role in Washington. Will he deliver the consistency the Commanders need? Guess we’ll find out soon enough!
