We’re so in the endgame now if we’re talking about the regular season. The scale of the emotions is at the level of the Chiefs fans. There’s a bright scenario on one side for the team given they’re on a quest to make history to lift the Super Bowl title. Third Straight Time! But on the other end of the scale, there’s this news that Patrick Mahomes is not playing today against the Denver Broncos.

But first things first. The head coach, Andy Reid, and the roster management might have been on that idea for some time now. Why so? I mean, look at the past couple of weeks or so. The Chiefs have played three games in less than 2 weeks. Not to mention they’ve won all three of them. And let’s not forget the QB’s ankle injury that somehow shook the entire Chiefs’ fanbase. So, yeah, it appears these are the reasons why the Chiefs and Reid have decided to rest Mahomes.

Let’s talk about the big picture here. In his absence, the 9-year veteran QB, Carson Wentz, will take charge in the final game tonight. And when we say Wentz, all we can say is the guy’s had a tough journey for this game. The 32-year-old, who was an MVP contender back in 2017, is now all set to end things for the Kansas City team in the regular season. His first start this season!

“He should be starting in the league somewhere, that’s what he should be doing,” the head coach stated for Wentz. “By his ability and the way he goes about his business, he’s so structured and disciplined in his study habits and working out, all those things are just top-notch.” So far, Wentz has just a cameo against the Browns when Mahomes got a high ankle sprain. The backup QB completed his two passes for 20 yards.

And the way things stand now, he’s got an opportunity of a lifetime. Andy Reid had confirmed that the backup QB will exit the Chiefs’ locker room after this season. And if the 32-year-old managed to shine tonight, who knows there’s a pretty handsome contract on the cards for him?

Patrick Mahomes and other benched players will coach tonight

What’s today’s job for Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the other key starters, you ask? The offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, has sorted out their role for the showdown against the Broncos tonight. Likewise, the first job of the benched players would be to remain sharp during the game.

And when a reporter asked him what would be a pretty extended layoff for them before they play again, the OC replied“They have to be prepared whichever way it goes and they do a good job with that.” Though you never know what will happen on the field and given the Broncos will be grinding for a playoff berth, and Nagy couldn’t agree more. “They know that too, if they’re not playing, it’s their role too to become another coach and be there,” Nagy further said.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Carson Wentz prove he's still got it, or will the Chiefs regret resting Mahomes?

Have an interesting take?

On the flip side, injuries, turnovers, or shifts in momentum can quickly change the course of the game, and the OC knows it pretty well. So there may arise an instance when the Chiefs may need to alter their strategies during the game. And that’s why Nagy wants his players to be prepared. “You have to be ready, too. I mean there’s you never know how things go in the game and if you’re up and suited…you got to prepare and keep it the same,” he said.
